NAPPANEE -ÊThe Wawasee Warriors' dreams of being the Cinderella story of the NorthWood sectional were crushed when they fell to West Noble 62-53 Thursday night.

In a game that was much closer than the final score reflected, the Warriors started with a bang as Andrew Warner scored the first basket of the game to put the Warriors up 2-0 after less than one minute of play. However, West Noble answered with a basket of their own, and the shootout began.

At the end of the first quarter, the score was knotted at 11, but West Noble's Mike Sparks netted a basket with 7:24 remaining in the first half to give the Chargers a slim lead.

Jeremy High answered the West Noble basket with one of his own to tie the score at 13 with 5:42 left in the second frame, but West Noble scored two more baskets to take another lead that the Warriors would not be able to overcome by the end of the first half.

The Chargers built a five- point lead, and the Warriors headed into the locker room down 28-23 at the half.

"We got into foul trouble in the first half, but we battled back and stayed in the game," said Wawasee coach Jerry Davis.

West Noble held Wawasee scoreless for the first three minutes of the third stanza and built a 13-point lead until R.J. Wilson broke the Warrior scoring rut by netting a two-point goal with 4:29 left in the quarter.

Wilson's basket started a Wawasee scoring onslaught that helped the Warriors cut West Noble's 13-point lead down to four by the end of the third frame, 40-36.

An Andrew Packer basket with 6:26 left in regulation brought Wawasee to within two, 43-41, but West Noble scored two more baskets to restore a six-point Charger lead.

With 4:47 to play, Joel Dragoo hit a two-point basket to make the score 49-43, but Chris Lambert hit a three-pointer with 4:33 remaining to get the Warriors to within three.

By the 2:27 mark, Wawasee had cut the Charger lead down to two. Again, the West Noble squad built a small lead, but Wawasee came back to reduce it.

With 24.6 seconds left in the game, R.J. Nethaway was fouled while shooting. The ball slid through the net and Nethaway hit the conversion free throw to earn a three-point play and put the Warriors back within two, 55-53.

Nethaway's basket would be the last that Wawasee would score as they were forced to fould to stop the clock. West Noble hit 7 of 10 free throws in the final 24 seconds to earn a 62-53 victory and advance to the final game of the sectional.

High led the Warriors with 14 point while Lambert added 12.

"We were concerned with their ability to score," said Wawasee coach Jerry Davis. "We held them where we needed them to be and kept the score in the 50s. We couldn't have played them in the 60s or 70s so we did well in that respect.

"Our kids have grown up a lot this season. They really have gone from boys to men. They have endured, they have sacrificed, and they have gone through a lot as a team and as individuals. I am very proud of our kids.

"The end is never easy. This is the last time these seniors will put the jerseys on and be able to come out and play."

The Warriors finish the season 1-21, with their lone win coming against Lakeland in the first round of the sectional.
