The 23-year-old teaching pro at Raccoon Run in Warsaw took a step toward doing so Monday when he shot 6-under 66 and won a U.S. Open qualifying round at Sycamore Hills in Fort Wayne.
“It was a good round,” Isabel said this morning in a phone conversation while he was driving through Kentucky on his way to another tournament. “There were some tight pins, but that’s part of it.”
Isabel’s round included 12 pars and six birdies – four on the front and two on the back.
He won the qualifying round by one stroke over Brownsburg’s Seth Fair.
Also advancing to a 36-hole sectional qualifier in Illinois on June 4 are Vince India (Deerfield, Ill.) and Brian Maurer (Richmond).
Both India and Maurer shot 2-under 70 Monday.
“I hit the ball in the right spots,” said Isabel. “I played great off the tee. When I hit the ball on the green on the final hole at 6-under, that was a good feeling knowing 100 percent I was advancing.”
On the line at next month’s 36-hole qualifying round in Illinois is a berth in the U.S. Open.
“My dream is to play in a major against the best golfers in the world,” said Isabel.
While living in his native England in 2009, Isabel – 19 at the time – advanced to the final qualifying round for the British Open.
Isabel said that having his girlfriend, Mallory Hepler, serve as his caddy Monday made the day even more special.
“Having Mallory there with me was special,” said Isabel. “That was a special moment for us.”
Hepler, a 2006 Warsaw Community High School grad, is the daughter of Raccoon Run owner/pro Denny Hepler and Cindy Hepler.[[In-content Ad]]
