Sacred Heart Elementary School will have to find a new principal to lead the school.

Tuesday night, Sacred Heart's current principal, Mary Ann Irwin, was named superintendent for North Miami School Corp., Denver, Ind.[[In-content Ad]]Irwin retired from Mt. Pleasant Township Community School Corp., Yorktown, as superintendent in June 2007. She then assumed the position of principal at Sacred Heart, Warsaw, for the Diocese of Fort Wayne and South Bend.

"I had been contacted by members of the State Universities Superintendent Search Committee several weeks ago to see if I would consider returning to a superintendent position," said Irwin. "There are many superintendent positions open throughout Indiana and boards are looking for qualified, experienced superintendent candidates."

After meeting with the North Miami School Board, administrators, teachers and students, Irwin said it felt like a good match.

Irwin previously served in administrative positions at North Newton School Corp., Tippecanoe Valley School Corp., Whitko School Corp., Wabash City, Eastbrook, Salem Community Schools/South Central Special Education Coop and the Diocese of Lafayette.

She has held positions as a teacher, Title I administrator, Title program coordinator, principal, curriculum director, assistant superintendent and superintendent. She also has served as basic skills coordinator for Ivy-Tech State College, Warsaw and Muncie, and administrator for the United Auto Workers-General Motors Learning Skills Center for the Marion, Ind., GM plant.

North Miami is about half the size of Yorktown as far as the district goes, Irwin said. It's one campus with the elementary school, junior-senior high school and administration building all in one location. The total student population is about 1,200.

Irwin said she will finish at Sacred Heart June 30, and her three-year contract with North Miami is effective July 1.

"The best thing (about Sacred Heart) is the staff and the students. The staff really pulls together, they are really competent and fun, and they really accomplish the goal of educating young people," said Irwin. "The kids are also fun and polite. It's a good place to be."

She also said, "Each of the private and public schools which I have been fortunate to work in have had top test scores, and students, parents, teachers and staff that expect the best in academics and behavior from their students. I absolutely will take all that with me and will look forward to working with the students and staff at North Miami School Corp. to achieve at their highest level."

Irwin said she will continue to live in Warsaw with her husband, Jim, as North Miami is only a 30-minute drive. Jim is a retired teacher and coach. The Irwins have four children, all of whom are teachers, and have 13 grandchildren.
