He was born Nov. 24, 1923, in Wabash County, to Paul G. and Anna Nordmann Grist. On Dec. 10, 1949, he married Mary Rose Harrison, who survives.
In 1946, he entered into business with his father at Grist Builders Supply Inc., North Manchester. He was the third generation at the business. Following retirement in 1984, he worked part-time at Star Excavating, Bippus, until 2004. He graduated from Chester High School in 1941. He served in Pacific Operation in World War II in the 339th engineering construction battalion. He attended Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church, North Manchester. He was a member of the Deming Lodge 88 F&AM, North Manchester, and of the York Rite, Fort Wayne, where he became a Knight of York Cross of Honor in 1978. On April 27, 1955, he became a member of Knights Templar of Wabash Commandrey 37 of Wabash, where he was eminent commander in 1972.
Surviving are a son, Brent Matthew Grist, North Manchester; three daughters: Cleo June (and spouse Andy) Haxton, Peru; Peggy G. (and spouse Herbert) Schaetzle, Bourbon; and Debra Jayne Grist, North Manchester; a sister, Madelene Ryall, Melbourne, Fla.; three grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by a brother and a sister.
A graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Fairview Cemetery, Servia, with Pastor J.P. Freeman officiating.
