How is the more rapid seasonal change affecting local forest ecosystems this year?
Kosciusko Lakes and Streams is hosting an interpretive hike along the Heritage Trail near Winona Lake April 7.
Luke Hunt, a KLAS staff member, will be the hiking guide.
He is a retired secondary science educator from the Whitko school district and a certified naturalist in Indiana. Nate Bosch, the KLAS Director, states “This is a unique opportunity to go for a walk in the woods with a local expert and enjoy a spring morning out in nature.”
The hike will be a non-strenuous walk suitable for participants of all ages and fitness levels. The hike is scheduled to begin at 10 AM and end at Noon. Participants should meet at the Heritage Trail parking lot off Boys City Drive in Winona Lake, Indiana.
As part of the hike, participants will identify Spring wildflowers and learn about plant medicinal values along the Heritage Trail. Migratory birds will be observed and some of their springtime habits will be described. Hikers will learn to create musical instruments from common local plant species. Other natural features along the Heritage Trail will be noted on the hike as well.
According to Bosch, “Very few people in northern Indiana know as much about our natural resources as Luke Hunt. His passion for our local forests, streams, prairies, and lakes is contagious.” [[In-content Ad]]
