Six inmates from the Kosciusko County Jail face charges after an alleged escape attempt last week.

According to a Kosciusko County Sheriff's Department report made available today, the incident occurred Thursday evening and resulted in one man becoming stuck. A crew from the Warsaw Fire Department was called to the jail, where a portion of a wall was cut away to free the inmate who was wedged between the wall and the ceiling.

Keith See, 21, of 1823 E. Market St., Warsaw, told KCSD officials that he and several others were involved since at least September in entering the ceiling and working on breaking through the wall.

See told police he made it through the wall but couldn't find his way out of the jail and was returning through the opening in the wall when he got stuck between the cement block wall and the ceiling.

The plan was discovered about 7:10 p.m. Thursday, when a jail officer checking the cells noticed the room was dark. Upon further inspection, the light fixture was found on a top bunk in the cell. It was then learned that See was in the ceiling.

The inmate who reportedly initiated the idea of the alleged escape attempt was released prior to any destruction of the air ducts and wall caused by the other inmates, according to an incident report. However, Jeremy James Bartrom, 21, of 3484 N. CR 100E, Warsaw, reportedly helped gather tools for the work prior to leaving the jail.

Bartrom is charged with conspiracy to escape. He was released from the KCJ on Oct. 15.

See; Gregory D. Hiner, 23, of 9407 E. Backwater Road, North Webster; Lynden E. Swanson, 25, Argos; Anthony W. Chesnut, 23, of 8885 E. Circle Drive, Syracuse; and Todd W. Frazier, 19, of Tri Lakes, were each charged with attempted escape and with criminal mischief for the damages caused to the jail.

See is being held in the KCJ on four counts of child molesting; Hiner is charged with theft/receiving stolen property; Swanson is jailed on two counts of failure to appear in Kosciusko Superior Court II; Chesnut is awaiting transfer to an Indiana Department of Corrections facility; and Frazier was booked into the jail after his bond was revoked in a Kosciusko Circuit Court case.

All of the inmates housed in the affected cell block were removed to another area until ceiling repairs can be completed. [[In-content Ad]]
