KOKOMO — The final scrimmage between the Indiana Senior All-Stars and Junior All-Stars ended in an odd way Wednesday at Kokomo High School's Memorial Gymnasium.
Tuning up for this weekend's annual matchup with the Kentucky All-Stars, the Indiana All-Stars played two scrimmages against Indiana Junior All-Stars, with Wednesday's game ending with the juniors winning 104-102 in sudden-death overtime.
"It's my first one — ever," Warsaw senior all-star Nic Moore said about the sudden-death period. "I've never really played in that situation before."
Because of heat and the time of the game, the first overtime period was actually just a minute long, with the juniors holding the ball for all but seven seconds and missing their opportunity.
With another period on the way, the coaches agreed to a sudden death format.
With the first to score winning, junior Yogi Ferrell, who'll be attending Indiana Universtiy, hit a gliding jumper from the right baseline, handing the seniors a loss.
The juniors' win came two days after the seniors narrowly defeated the juniors 117-113 at Washington High School.
With the scrimmages out of the way, the Indiana All-Stars now travel to Louisville, Ky. Friday at Bellarmine University to take on the Kentucky All-Stars before playng a second game Saturday at Conesco Fieldhouse in Indianapolis.
In preparation for taking on Kentucky's best, the Indiana seniors scrimmaged a junior team with five of its six core members ranked in the ESPNU Top 100. Among those five are Hamilton Southeastern's Gary Harris (No. 16, undecided), North Central's D'Vauntes Smith-Rivera (No. 32, undecided), Park Tudor's Yogi Ferrell (No. 34, Indiana University), Lake Central's Glenn Robinson III (No. 60, University of Michigan) and Broad Ripple's Ron Patterson (No. 86, Indiana University). Kokomo's DJ Ballentine rounds out the core six.
Those six players played in each of the two scrimmages, joining six southern all-stars for the game in Washington and six northern all-starts for the game in Kokomo.
Among those six northern junior all-stars was Whitko's Logan Irwin, who had a steal and a rebound in the game.
"It's what I expected," Irwin said about the game. " They're a little stronger, but that's expected with seniors."
Scrimmaging against a senior team loaded with Division-I players, Irwin held his own, although the athleticism of the other players did show.
"It's fun to see how athletic some kids are and what they can do with it," Irwin said.
To help combat the seniors' athleticism, the juniors had some of the there own — outside of the core six.
From the north, the most athletic player on the floor was LaPorte LaLumiere's Hanner Perea, another Indiana University recruit.
Beginning the game with a nifty spin move that ended with a two-handed slam on Mr. Basketball Cody Zeller, Perea finished the game with just six points, but had 15 rebounds and three blocked shots.
For his part, Zeller, who will be at Indiana in the fall, had a few dunks too, going for 25 points and 21 rebounds.
While he didn't have any dunks, Moore did make his presence felt, hitting 4 of 8 three-pointers on his way to 18 points.
Moore also led the seniors with five assists, playing without Kentucky-recruit Marquis Teague and Michigan State-bound Branden Dawson — both of whom had prior engagements.
Teague is the seventh-ranked player in the 2011 class, and the No. 1 point guard. With him out, Moore had some more time to gel with his senior teammates.
"It makes other people step up," Moore said. "With Marquis and (Branden) gone, that's going to help us Friday against Kentucky."
Zeller, Teague and Dawson were all named McDonald's All-Americans this year, making this year's Indiana All-Star team a formidable opponent. And scrimmaging against a junior team as loaded as the one they played Wednesday can only be a benefit as the seniors look to win their fifth-straight over Kentucky Friday. Currently, the Indiana team holds an 81-42 series advantage over its Kentucky counterparts.
"I think we're prepared after playing the juniors," Moore said. "They have a real tough team, with a strong core group. The north and south games were both competitive, so I think they got us ready for the game Friday."
