The Kosciusko County Redevelopment Commission signed its support Thursday to a co-op’s plan for an $8 million expansion near Mentone.
Rob Zeldenrust, senior agronomy manager for Wabash-based North Central Cooperative, said it plans to consolidate and expand area facilities into an 80-acre crop service center near Mentone. The company will invest $8.27 million in renovating and equipping two buildings on the site, adding more than 18,000 square feet of production and office space as well as a projected 15 new jobs.
The center is a priority project for North Central, he said, and will begin trial operations by spring or summer.
The co-op considered several sites in Indiana and Michigan and will still need to see some infrastructure development around the Mentone site, according to Zeldenrust and Rob Young, senior director of business development with the Hagerman Group. The two presented a request for the county to establish a tax increment finance district in a three-square-mile area between Mentone and Burket.
The TIF would help fund improvements like roadwork, needed because a lot of product will be shipped out by truck after coming to the site by rail.
The commission approved a declaratory resolution of support Thursday. The TIF request will go next to the county commissioners.[[In-content Ad]]
