LEXINGTON, Ky. – Ryan Cline of Carmel scored a game-high 23 points Friday night, including a driving layup with 25.3 seconds remaining that proved decisive, to lift the Indiana All-Star boys to an 83-80 victory over Kentucky in the opener of their annual series in the Clive Beck Center at Transylvania University.
Jaelan Sanford of Evansville Reitz and Matt Holba of Guerin Catholic each added 15 points for Indiana, which extended its lead to 92-42 in the all-star series that dates to 1940.
Dwayne Sutton of Louisville Manual and Jalen Perry of Louisville Ballard each scored 16 points to pace Kentucky. Evan Hall of Knott County Central tallied 12 points for the Bluegrass boys.
Cline's bucket gave Indiana its final advantage in a game that saw seven ties and 10 lead changes, most of those coming in the final eight minutes.
A Cline 3-pointer gave Indiana a 62-59 edge with 8:15 to go, but Sutton's driving reverse layup gave Kentucky a 67-65 lead with 6:25 left. Back and forth the teams went from that point, Holba slamming home a dunk off a feed from Richmond's Joel Okafor to give Indiana a 72-71 margin with 3:39 to go.
James "Beetle" Bolden drained a 3-pointer with 55.5 seconds left to give Kentucky an 80-79 lead and when Sanford stepped out of bounds with 42.2 ticks to go, things looked ominous for the Hoosiers.
But Indiana forced a tough shot, Holba tapped the rebound out Cline and the Carmel ace went strong to the basket, maneuvering around a defender for the go-ahead basket in the final 30 seconds.
Kentucky went back to Bolden in attempt to win, but Brownsburg's K.J. Walton blocked Bolden's jumper from the right wing. Cline won a mad dash for the loose ball, tapping it toward the other end. Sanford got to that ball first and took it to the basket, converting a layup as the final buzzer sounded to account for the final.
Cline scored 10 points and Sanford netted nine points as Indiana took a 42-34 lead at halftime. Sutton countered with 10 points and eight rebounds, while Perry tallied with eight points for Kentucky.
For the game, Indiana shot 41 percent from the field (28 of 68), 35 percent from 3-point range (10 of 28) and 65 percent on free throws (17 of 26). Kentucky countered with 31 percent from the floor (25 of 79), just 19 percent on 3-pointers (5 of 26) and 71 percent from the line (25 of 35).
The Hoosiers prevailed despite being outrebounded 59-41. Sutton pulled 11 rebounds for Kentucky, while Teague grabbed 11 boards for Indiana. Cline, Sanford and Okafor each had three assists for Indiana.
In the girls game, Miss Basketball Ali Patberg of Columbus North and Jordyn Frantz of NorthWood each scored 15 points as Indiana blasted Kentucky 93-49.
Brittany Ward of Pike, Jenna Allen of Bedford North Lawrence and Michal Miller of Michigan City each added 10 points for Indiana, which extended its lead to 44-35 in the 40th year of the girls' series between the bordering states.
Morgan Rich of Allen County-Scottsville, Alexis Brewer of Bardstown and Dee Givens of Lexington Lafayette each scored eight points to pace Kentucky.
Patberg and Ward each scored six points to key a 23-2 burst early in the second half as Indiana broke open what had been a close game for a half.
Ward started the flurry with a back-door layup on a feed from Allen before Gaines converted a fast-break layup off a Patberg assist. Allen made a rebound basket and Ward followed with two free throws and another fast-break layup off a feed from Patberg.
Patberg then hit a pull-up jumper on the break, a pair of free throw and another pull-up jumper on the break. Alexa Bailey made a steal and layup, and Miller followed with a 3-pointer from the left wing. Sanders then converted a steal and layup before Kentucky's Morris converted 1 of 2 free throws.
Indiana continued its surge, running off the next 10 points on an Allen rebound jumper, a Maggard 3-pointer, two Allen free throws and another Maggard 3-pointer.
Before long, Tiara Murphy sank a pair of 3-pointers to key another Indiana blitz. Frantz then hit three 3-pointers down the stretch as the Hoosiers pulled away for the 44-point decision.
For the game, Indiana made 11-of-20 3-pointers, while Kentucky converted just 1-of-13 shots from long range. Allen grabbed a game-high 13 rebounds as Indiana outboarded their neighbors 62-44. Patberg, Frantz and Madeline Raster each posted a game-high three assists.
Patberg scored eight points while Ward, Allen and Sanders each tallied four points as Indiana took a 30-25 lead at the half. Rich paced Kentucky with six points and Nora Kiesler of Louisville Assumption chipped in five points for Kentucky in the opening 20 minutes.
Indiana led 18-13 when Frantz hit a 3-pointer, but Kentucky used a 6-0 burst to go up briefly before an Allen layup made it 20-19.
A Patberg free throw and a Ward fast-break layup made it 23-21 before Kentucky's Cameron McPherson of Danville tied the game with a driving layup. Ward hit two free throws, and Patberg drained a 3-pointer before Miller and Evansville Mater Dei's Tori Schickel each hit 1-of-2 free throws and a layin by Kentucky's Givens for the halftime count.
The teams will play again Saturday in Bankers Life Fieldhouse in the rematch in the annual home-and-home series. The girls' game will begin at 5 p.m., and the boys will follow at about 7:30 p.m.[[In-content Ad]]
