By Craig Brosman-
During a traffic stop on Corlys Lane at 2:16 a.m. Friday, KCSD deputies arrested Maryellen Marie Stephens for possession of methamphetamine, a Class D felony, and possession of paraphernalia, a misdemeanor.
Stephens was a passenger in the vehicle that was stopped.
Early Friday morning, officers on patrol near Diamond Lake saw a vehicle with a paper plate over its license plate. The driver got out of the vehicle and walked to 5114 W. Corlys Lane.
Officers spoke with the driver of the vehicle and asked him if he would come back to his squad car to talk. After speaking with the driver, officers asked if it was OK to search the vehicle and the driver consented to a vehicle search.
Officers approached the passenger side door and asked Stephens to step out of the vehicle.
Officers noticed a bright-colored zipped bag in a storage pocket in the vehicle. When the bag was examined, officers found pieces of aluminum foil, hollow tubes with residue and charred chunks of material that were suspected to be methamphetamine.
The material was sent to the Indiana State Police Laboratory for official weight and testing.
Stephens was placed under arrest and transferred to the Kosciusko County Jail where she was booked on $2,000 bond.
The driver was not charged.
This was the third arrest in a week and a half as a result of increased patrols in the Diamond Lake area.
Kosciusko County Sheriff’s Department Public Information Officer Sgt. Chad Hill said, “It was productive in the apprehension of those conducting criminal activity that has been called in by people in the community.”
When it comes to keeping neighborhoods clean and drug free, Hill said there are a few things that each neighborhood can do.
“Everyone needs to be more aware of what is in their neighborhood,” Hill said. “If something seems out of place, nine times out of 10 it usually is. When you see something out of place just call the Drug Task Force or the Sheriff’s Department.”
There is an anonymous tip line that Hill suggests individuals call if they have information. The number is 574-372-2494.[[In-content Ad]]
