Images and interactive elements encourage visitors to revisit fond memories and traditions of holidays past. The Indiana History Center, home of the IHS, is at 450 W. Ohio St., downtown Indianapolis.
In this blend of something old and something new, visitors will be led through the exhibit by holiday Nutcracker soldiers, learning more about that particular tradition as they go. Holiday music will accompany and complement the many interactive, hands-on elements that can be found throughout the building.
In Lacy Gallery, guests are invited to step inside Hoosier Gene Shepherds' famous tale "A Christmas Story" and take their picture with the infamous "leg lamp" and other icons from the book and film. The lamp, in various sizes, and other related items are available for sale in the Basile History Market.
Also on display in this area are several letters to Santa Claus over the years, courtesy of Santa's elves and Santa Claus Museum in Santa Claus, Ind. A special treat for young visitors awaits here - the IHS will collect letters for Santa that will post it to the "big guy" with the help of the elves and museum. Letters delivered to the History Center by Dec. 12 will receive a response before Christmas.
Eli Lilly Hall's main level will contain kiosks with a variety of IHS collections images depicting holiday scenes from different times and places around the state, and trees will be decorated and placed throughout the building.
On the mezzanine level, four separate scenes will offer opportunities for engagement and interaction for visitors of all ages. Guests can role play in a vintage kitchen and write down holiday food memories. Another area will explore the various images of Santa Claus over the years and collect votes for the all-time favorite cookie to set out on Christmas Eve. Another photo opportunity is available next to a winter scene as well as an antique single runner sled and Flexible Flyer. Families can take a break from the holiday madness in a story corner and tree-decorating area.
Cases in front of the William Henry Smith Memorial Library will display illustrations of Santa Claus by Thomas Nast, found in bound volumes of "Harper's Weekly," and albums containing winter photographs of the Louise Stanfield Carpenter family, which lived in the historic Woodruff Place neighborhood.
