And he entered the race just by being at the right place at the right time.
Rey Alvarez was in Warsaw over the weekend for a wedding, staying at the Holiday Inn. After his morning run Saturday, he ran into Dave and Cheryl Mehlberg, who were wearing their Husky 5K t-shirts. Dave and Cheryl are the parents of Scott Mehlberg, Harrison Elementary School teacher and Husky 5K co-organizer with Dan Graney.
Alvarez asked Dave and Cheryl what the Husky 5K was. They told him, and Alvarez asked if he could follow them. They welcomed him to go.[[In-content Ad]]The Harrison Elementary Husky 5K is a race to raise funds for the construction of the second half-mile trail at Harrison Elementary School.
Not only was Alvarez the top male finisher, but he was the top finisher overall. He completed the race in 16:11.6 minutes.
The top female finisher was Justina Faulkner, Warsaw. She completed the race in 19:00.4 minutes.
Before the Husky 5K was the One Mile Fun Run. Children and their parents raced to the finish line, with their supporters cheering them on. After the 5K was the Pee Wee Classic. Little children, as young as 1 year old, ran the trail at Harrison.
Scott Mehlberg estimated that 291 people registered for the Husky events this year, with 276 participating. There were about 210 runners in the 5K, 41 in the One Mile Fun Run and approximately 25 in the Pee Wee Classic. Last year, about 258 participated in the three events.
"We're really encouraged with the numbers continuing to grow," said Mehlberg. "Our youngest was 1 year old, and our oldest was 72. It was just great to have that many people in the community come out and do something healthy."
"We're definitely bigger, and we feel like we're better," said Graney. "We feel like we can get even bigger."
Graney said they are grateful for the community coming out to participate, and for the sponsors of the event. Among the sponsors were Symmetry Medical, Silveus Insurance Group, Embarq, Dr. David Vanwormer, Hallmark, KFC, Jansen Orthopaedic Clinic LLC, The Scott Family and Anytime Fitness.
At 72, George Terpstra, from Huntley, Ill., was the oldest participant. He said he was going to do the run with his daughter, but she broke her foot. So, instead, Terpstra ran with his son-in-law, Bart Benedict, Warsaw.
Benedict enjoyed running the 5K with his father-in-law. He said, "I feel great. It was fun to run with him."
Mitch Reinholt was one of the former Harrison students who ran.
"It looks like it's very successful. It's nice to come back to Harrison where I went to school," Reinholt said.
He's been keeping in shape, he said. He ran a 5K last week, and he's running the Triathlon in Winona Lake next weekend. Saturday, Reinholt said, he didn't do quite as well as he would have liked, but his goal was to finish the race in under 23 minutes. He finished the race at 22 minutes, 34 seconds.
Bill and Missy Hartman ran the Husky 5K to have fun and support Harrison Elementary.
"I ran last year, and I just like to run. It's well put together," Missy said.
Bill praised the Husky 5K course. "It's good for running. They do a good job with traffic control so it makes it safe for the runners," he said.
"Today's race was put together very well," said Aaron Gaff, Warsaw. "And I enjoyed running knowing I was assisting the students at Harrison Elementary with the building of the trail."
At 16 minutes, 30.1 seconds, Mike McKeighen, Pierceton, finished the 5K in second place, but was first in the Male 25 to 29 division.
"It was OK," McKeighen said of his run. "It was really humid, tough conditions. It was a tough race. I was OK with how I ran."
