A South Whitley man has been charged with critically beating a Huntington man in a planned fight along a county dirt road late Wednesday morning.

Kosciusko County Sheriff’s Department deputies were alerted around 11 a.m. Wednesday that two men were engaged in a live physical fight along CR 200N, just west of CR 400E. Police arrived to find 26-year-old Jeremy W. Boxell, of Huntington, laying in the roadway, unresponsive and going in and out of consciousness, with large contusions on his left eye and temple and  bleeding from his eye and mouth, the sheriff’s department said.

Boxell was taken to Kosciusko Community Hospital, then to Lutheran Hospital in Fort Wayne. He remains in critical condition.

An investigation led police to Boxell’s estranged wife, who said she had been dating 21-year-old Zachary J. Lee, of South Whitley, and that the two men had been in talks of a fight, the department said.

Deputies made their way to Lee, and learned that the men had scheduled a fight along the county road and that during the brawl, Lee took Boxell to the ground with a choke hold before kicking him in the face and leaving him in the roadway, the department said.

Lee was booked into Kosciusko County Jail on a preliminary charge of aggravated battery. He was fixed a $10,000 bond.[[In-content Ad]]
