Hundreds of volunteers spent Friday and Saturday packing meals for malnourished children in Haiti and the Dominican Republic.

Approximately 500 volunteers packed rice, soy products and dehydrated vegetables in the warehouse at Circle M Spring Inc., Warsaw. Volunteers volunteered two-hour shifts to pack the food.

The cost for each meal and shipping is 21 cents per meal, and World Compassion Network needs $21,000 to cover the food and shipping expenses.

WCN put a $12,000 down payment for the food and shipping costs, but is still seeking community support.

Besides packing food, volunteers also watched a video on Feed My Starving Children, the organization WCN purchased the food from.

Joe Wilkey, WCN executive director, said there were 100,000 meals packed Friday and Saturday. There were 70,000 meals that will go to children in the Dominican Republic, and 30,000 meals for Haiti.

WCN is a faith-based disaster relief organization that responds to disasters in Warsaw and all around the world.

"These efforts serve a multiple purpose in getting a job done, and the benefit from this is the community comes together and takes a part in this and helps feed children in Haiti and the Dominican Republic," Wilkey said.

Metzger Trucking used its truck to take the food to WCN's warehouse in Silver Lake. Shipping will be arranged from Silver Lake to the Dominican Republic.

WCN has had volunteers working in Haiti to assist with earthquake relief efforts.

"We have found out it is important to keep relationships with the people who rely on us somewhere else in the world so it keeps the integrity level up," Wilkey said.

Volunteers said they appreciated the opportunity to help those in Haiti and the Dominican Republic.

Dillon Hand, 15, Warsaw, said he was glad to help.

"We hear about hunger in other countries on the news, but it is good to be able to take the initiative to help with the starvation problem," Hand said.

Shaylnn Marley, 26, Warsaw, said it was an honor to help.

"I have been so blessed with what I have, and I am glad to help those who do not have what I do," Marley said.

People who want to contribute financially to pay for the food and shipping costs can call WCN at 574-267-5427 or visit WCN's website at www.w-c-n.org[[In-content Ad]]
