NORTH MANCHESTER – Hubert R. Newcomer, 93, North Manchester, died at 7:10 p.m. March 10, 2016, at Timbercrest HealthCare, North Manchester.
He was born June 27, 1922, in Monroe Township, Kosciusko County, to Floyd Vincent and Mary Marie Fox Newcomer, who both preceded him in death. On June 2, 1946, he married Alice Nadine Andrews Baldwin, who survives.
He was a member of North Manchester Church of the Brethren. He graduated from Sidney High School in 1940, he attended one year of Bethany Bible School from 1947 to 1948. He graduated from McPherson College, Kansas, in 1950 with a bachelor of arts degree. He went on to get a master of divinity degree from Bethany Theological Seminary in 1953. Growing up he was responsible for helping his father on the farm while attending school. He was licensed in 1946 and ordained in 1950 in the Spring Creek Church of the Brethren. He went on to pastor at Polo Church of the Brethren, Illinois, for five years and Manchester Church of the Brethren for seven years. He then joined the denominational staff for 12 years, spending five years on the Department of Interpretation/Stewardship and seven years as the annual conference manager. He was the executive director of The Palms of Sebring Retirement Community, Sebring, Fla., from 1977 to 1988 retiring in 1988. He served 65 years in the Church of the Brethren Ministries. In 1993 he moved to Timbercrest Senior Living Community.
Surviving are three daughters: Nancy (and spouse John) Moore, Wilmington, Ohio; Kathy (and spouse Alan) Uecke, West Chicago; and Beverly (and spouse Fred) Schmidt, Williamston, Mich.; one brother-in-law, Charles Eugene (Gene) Valentine, North Manchester; one sister, Vivian Miller, North Manchester; 10 grandchildren: Erin (and spouse Jerry) Socha, Nathan (and spouse Michele) Moore, Ryan (and spouse Alicia) Uecke, Jeffrey (and spouse Brianna) Uecke, Steven (and spouse Erin) Uecke, Laura Uecke, Jacob Uecke, Daisy (and Ericka Bates) Schmidt, April Schmidt and Abigail (and spouse Drew) Ruonavaana; and 13 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one brother and four sisters.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at North Manchester Church of the Brethren, with Pastor Kurt Borgman officiating. Burial will be at Manchester Church of the Brethren Memorial Garden at a later date.
Calling will be at the church following the service.
