COLUMBIA CITY - Howard J. Marsh, 83, of Columbia City, died at 8:49 p.m. March 27, 2009, in Parkview Whitley Hospital, Columbia City.

He was born Jan. 16, 1926, in Cumberland, Wis., to Harry A. and Esther Mills Marsh. On Nov. 3, 1950, he married Dorothy B. Johnson, who died Aug. 14, 1999. On Oct. 28, 2000, in Columbia City, he married Dortha Mae Cooper, who survives.

Growing up in the Hartford City and Sidney areas, he graduated from Sidney High School in 1944. Shortly after graduation, he enlisted in the U.S. Army, serving in France and Germany during World War II. A resident of Whitley County since 1952, he was an inspector of specialty electric motors at General Electric for many years, retiring in 1988. He attended New Life Bible Church; was a member of the Whitley County YMCA; and was a former member of American Legion Post 98 and South Whitley Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Also surviving are a daughter, Roxanne (and spouse Jerry) Squires, Larwill; a son, Brian Marsh, Columbia City; four grandsons, Eric and Joel Squires, Winona Lake, and Trenton and Ethan Marsh, Wolf Lake; a granddaughter, Bethany Squires, Larwill; a sister, Thelma (and spouse Al) Hill, Fort Wayne; brother-in-law, Curtiss (and spouse Joyce) Johnson, Columbia City; and many step-children and step-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Bradley Erin Marsh; and two brothers, Arthur, Roger, Robert and Harry Jr. Marsh.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at DeMoney-Grimes Funeral Home, 600 Countryside Drive, Columbia City, with Pastor Curtiss Johnson officiating. Burial will be in Stough Cemetery, Columbia City.

Calling is from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday and one hour prior to service Wednesday at the funeral home.
