Housing Opportunities of Warsaw recently received Neighborhood Assistance Program funding from the Indianapolis Housing and Community Development Authority.

The Indiana Housing and Community Development Authority awarded the $11,900 tax credit to HOW June 28.

"The tax credits are to encourage local donors to contribute to safe and affordable housing in Kosciusko County," said HOW Executive Director Pam Kennedy.

If a person files a state income tax return with the state of Indiana, the state will credit 50 percent of the person's gift to HOW against the state income tax return, Kennedy said.

By supporting the Kosciusko County Homeowner Rehab Program, a person providing a financial gift of $100 or more can be eligible to receive a NAP tax credit on their 2007 tax return. The tax credits are worth 50 cents on every dollar.

The person receives 50 percent of their donation on their tax return for making homes safe and secure in Kosciusko County.

There is a limited number of credits available on a first-come, first-serve basis.

"This is an opportunity for our community to designate their tax dollars to go directly into Kosciusko County," Kennedy said.

On receipt of a gift of at least $100, Housing Opportunities will send the donor a form to fill out, or the donor may come into the Housing office at 827 S. Union St. to pick up the form.

Once the form is completed, HOW will file the completed forms with the Indiana Department of Revenue. Once it is processed, the state sends a voucher to the donor in time for them to file their annual tax return.

Housing Opportunities' goal is to have all the credits sold by Sept. 10 to be eligible for additional neighborhood assistance program credits each quarter for the following year.

For more information or questions, call Kennedy at 574-269-7641.
