Hoffert Officially Named WCS's Next Superintendent; HR Director, Deputy Treasurer Also Announced

July 28, 2016 at 4:25 p.m.

When a school employee brings family to a school board meeting, it’s usually to mark a big occassion.
Warsaw Community Schools Assistant Superintendent and Chief Academic Officer Dr. David Hoffert brought his wife, Rachael, and their three sons, Ryun, Robinson and Roosevelt, to the special meeting Tuesday. By a vote of 6 to 0, the board approved Hoffert as the school corporation’s next superintendent.
Hoffert will replace Dr. Craig Hintz, who is retiring as of June 30. Hintz was approved as superintendent April 27, 2009. Hintz announced then-CAO Hoffert as WCS’s assistant superintendent at a Dec. 16 meeting, a promotion that became effective Jan. 1.
Hoffert’s contract as superintendent, which will be effective July 1 through June 30, 2017, totals $148,723 annually with benefits. It passed a public hearing May 13 without comment and was published in the Times-Union May 3. Chief Financial Officer Kevin Scott said no changes were made to Hoffert’s contract since it was advertised.
There are seven members on the school board but Delores Hearn was absent from the meeting. Board President Jennifer Tandy said, “Delores Hearn was unable to be here this evening, but she has been in full discussions and is in agreement with the board.”
The board then approved a personnel report which included the transfer of Amy Sivley from chief accountability officer to director of human resources, and the hiring of April Fitterling as the corporation’s deputy treasurer.
Hintz stated the position of human resources director has been unfilled for the last three school years.
“Certainly, the board has established a budget capacity for that position,” he said, and now is the time to fill the position. As WCS is the fifth-largest employer in the county, with a staff of 1,200, Hintz said the human resources director is a “much-needed position” for the school corporation.
Fitterling next week will replace Kara Leisure, who is leaving the school corporation, as deputy treasurer.
Indiana school boards approve the deputy treasurer position at their reorganizational meeting in January. With the replacement happening mid-year, the board had to pass a resolution to name Fitterling as the deputy treasurer, effective Monday through the next appointment date, in January.
Scott informed the board that Fitterling just graduated from Indiana University-East with a business degree. “Her dad is my counterpart at Wa-Nee (Schools), so he’s been prompting her on things she needs to study,” he said.
She’s also a parent of Eisenhower Elementary students. Her husband is the store manager at Menard’s, Scott said.
“I think she’ll be a great addition,” he said.
Also approved in the personnel report were, new hires: Natalie Borzienatow, fourth-grade teacher, Harrison; Aimee Hagg, first-grade teacher, Harrison; Justin Broach, science teacher, Warsaw Community High School; Nina Ferry, special education teacher, WCHS; Zach Dodson, social studies teacher, WCHS; Thomas Hall, choral director, WCHS; Evelyne Champoux, second-grade teacher, Madison; Jennivine Yu, English language teacher, Leesburg; Angela Huffman, science teacher, WCHS; transfer: April Swihart, from accounts payable to administrative assistant to the CFO; separations: Elizabeth Tucker, sixth-grade teacher, Madison; Colette Herald, language arts teacher, Lakeview Middle School; Kyle McNulty, language arts/science teacher, LMS; and Angie Jarrett, agriculture teacher, Warsaw Area Career Center.[[In-content Ad]]
