Historical Society to Host Cemetery Program

July 28, 2016 at 4:25 p.m.

By Staff Report-

On July 9 at 6:40 p.m., the North Manchester Historical Society will host Ferne Baldwin, who will present a program on cemeteries in and around North Manchester and stories about some of the people buried in them.

The program will be held in the Assembly Room of Timbercrest Senior Living Community, 2201 East Street.

Ferne is a well-known figure at Timbercrest, where she hosts a monthly Life Time Learning program.  She describes herself as having three distinct careers:  private secretary, missionary, and college teacher.  She also served as president of the North Manchester Historical Society for ten years, and published their newsletter for over 11 years. At one time Baldwin served as a coal porter. Baldwin is a knowledgeable and entertaining speaker, and has presented many well-received programs at the Historical Society.

Baldwin has been to hundreds of cemeteries.  Her interest in local ones began because her husband Elmer’s family all came from this area, in particular from near Roann.  She will discuss some local cemeteries that are well-known and others that are not very conspicuous, and tell the stories of important early settlers from the Comstock and Fannin families; the Auginbaughs, who used to own half of North Manchester; and the later Wingers and Cordiers.

The public is also invited to come to the Assembly Room at 6 p.m. for a meal prior to the meeting.  For those who wish to attend the dinner, reservations must be made no later than noon July 6.

The cost of the meal is $7.50.  Reservations may be made by calling Mary at 260-982-1813 or Evelyn at 260-982-6777.

There is not cost for the program, which is free to the public.

All are welcome. [[In-content Ad]]
