Historic Home Tour On Tap

By TERESA SMITH, Times-Union Staff Writer-

Kosciusko County Historical Society is planning a Historical Home Tour this year, although the term "home" is used loosely.

Most of the seven buildings on the tour have housed families. The Wilson-Deaton one-room school house outside of Claypool is an exception, as is The White Hill Manor in Warsaw.

Committee members met with Dan and Eileen Ransbottom recently, owners of the old Claypool District School - No. 8.

The brick structure stands at the corner of County Farm Road and CR 700S.

Built in 1881, the building served as a one-room school house until 1914.

The property was owned by Clay Township until 1962, when Robert and Eleanor Scott purchased it. Dan Ransbottom acquired the grounds during an estate sale.

To date, an overhead door has been removed and the Ransbottoms have a craftsman recreating the original door; the old flooring has been removed with plans to replace the hardwood surface.

Ransbottom said the brick walls were in pretty good shape as were the window frames.

To his amazement, the wainscoating consists of three woods - oak, cherry and maple - in that order, all the way around the interior. Above the three wood panneling, is a painted-on blackboard.

The historic home tour is set for Sept. 13. Other properties on the tour are: Jerry and Julia Frush's home, 318 N. Lake St., Warsaw; Fred and Jo Helfrich's home, 1202 E. Main St., Warsaw; the Gilbert and Jan Knoop farm, 760 W. CR 800S, Claypool; the Rod and Ann Metzger farm, 76 E. CR 800S, Claypool; and the home of Garry and Jackie McCleary, 1507 S. County Farm Road, Warsaw.

Tickets are $8, and will be available at the Old Jail Museum, 121 N. Indiana St., Warsaw. [[In-content Ad]]
