At the end of this month, Winona Lake will lose the service of two residences that have modeled servant hood leadership and invested themselves fully into the community in which they live. Retha Hicks as clerk-treasurer and Joy Lohse as town council member. I’m restricted by the size of this letter so listing their many accomplishments will not be possible, and frankly, knowing Retha and Joy they wouldn’t like a list because that is not why they served.

Both Retha and Joy have served to truly give back and make the Winona Lake community a better place than it was when they assumed their respective roles.

There are many visible signs in which their work and service have impacted our community, however, there is a greater body of work that isn’t visible to most Winona Lake residents. The one most notable is the fiscal well-being their leadership has had on a small community during a very challenging economic time; a time when many small communities like ours were struggling to meet the basic needs of the community. Frankly, the opposite has been the case in Winona Lake, investment in services like the Winona Lake Fire Department and the Police Department have continued.

So it is with a simple and heartfelt “Thank You” I would like to extend my deepest appreciation for the service of these two residents to the Town of Winona Lake. Reth and Joy, may God bless you both for the work you have done.
