He was born Oct. 4, 1918, in Miami County, to Ernest and Jessie Shaw Merritt. On May 26, 1938, in St. Joseph, Mich., he married Mary Ellen Burkhart, who died May 16, 1996.
Living in North Manchester since 1932, he was a 1937 Chester High School graduate and a member of Congregational Christian Church, North Manchester. He worked for Burkhart Poultry and Egg until 1967, and Ford Meter Box, Wabash, from 1973-83. After retirement he worked at Shepherd's Chevrolet & Cadillac, North Manchester. He enjoyed woodworking and making clocks.
Surviving are a son, Karl (and wife Bonnie Dee) Merritt, North Manchester; four daughters: Donna Merritt, Indianapolis; Mrs. Vern (Martha) Pursifull, Huntington; Becky Merritt, Warsaw; and Beth Merritt, Ligonier; two sisters, Shirley Kauffman, Seattle, Wash.; and Mrs. Robert (Beverly) Yentes, Merced, Calif; 11 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Julie Kent Merritt; a sister; and five brothers.
A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Congregational Christian Church with Pastor J.P. Freeman officiating. Burial will be in Oaklawn Cemetery.
Calling is from noon to 2 p.m. Tuesday at the church.
