He was born Aug. 12, 1925, in Fort Wayne, to Henry and Florence Bunnell Schmidlin. On April 8, 1946, he married his high school sweetheart, Tina Nutter, who preceded him in death.
He was a graduate of Kokomo High School and Indiana Business College, and served in the U.S. Naval Amphibious Force in the Pacific during World War II. He served one year as a gunnery instructor and two years as chief gunners mate on his ship from the Philippines through the invasion of Okinawa. He received an honorable discharge April 1, 1946.
He was an accountant and was employed 18 years as controller in the automotive parts manufacturing industry, and 20 years in the health care industry for Dukes Memorial Hospital, Kosciusko Community Hospital and assistant administrator for Paris Community Hospital in Paris, Ill. He was a board member for Home Health Care and former state president and board member of the Hospital Financial Management Association. He and his wife, Tina, were co-owners of Baskin-Robbins ice cream stores in Warsaw and Plymouth, as well as the former Hill-Top Convenience Store on East Center Street. After retirement, he was a bus driver for Warsaw Community Schools and a tour bus driver for Summit Coaches of Fort Wayne. He was a member of the American Legion Post 49 in Warsaw and a member of Otterbein United Methodist Church in Atwood, and a former member and treasurer of the local Elks Lodge.
Surviving are his daughter, Caryn (and spouse Bobby) Scott, Inman, S.C.; a son, David (and spouse Verna) Schmidlin, Greer; six grandchildren: Crystal (and spouse Ryan) Finney, Greenville, S.C.; Brent Schmidlin, Warsaw; John Schmidlin, LaGrange; Amanda (and spouse LaMichael) Wade of the U.S. Army 82nd Air Borne, Fort Bragg, N.C.; Ryan (and spouse Mandi) Scott, Huntington; and Samantha (and spouse Caleb) Jones, Inman, S.C.; and eight great-grandchildren: Autumn, Morgan, Madeline, Jacob and Sophia Finney, all of Greenville; Jaden and Gabriel Jones, both of Inman; and Conner and Jenelle Scott, both of Huntington. Also preceding him were his parents, two brothers and one sister.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Grace and Zoar United Methodist Church, Burial is in MJ Dolly Cooper Veteran’s Cemetery, Anderson, S.C.
