He was born Jan. 6, 1917, in Langdon, N.D., to Johan and Helena Wiebe Veer. On Nov. 7, 1945, he married Estermay Harris, who died in 1998. On Nov. 27, 1999, in Franklin, she married Doxie Raines, who survives in Franklin.
He graduated high school in New York and attended the Illinois Institute of Technology. He was a U.S. Army World War II veteran serving the Southwest Pacific. He was a member of the American Legion Post 210 for 50 years, Masonic Lodge 715 F & AM for 50 years. He was a member of the Scottish Rite, South Bend, and a Shriner with the Mizpah, Fort Wayne. He was also a member of the American Historical Society of Germans from Russia. At the age of 91, he authored and had published his autobiography "A Farm Boy's Journey".
Also surviving are two daughters, Pamela M. (and spouse Gary) Pletcher, who is a teacher at Wawasee High School, Syracuse; Malina G. (and spouse Patrick) Kleepbua, Elkhart; a son, Kirk (and spouse Becki) Veer, Elkhart; two stepdaughters, Sarah (and spouse Russel) Hynds, Corydon, and Brenda "Faye" Smith, Detroit, Mich.; three grandchildren, eight step-grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and eight step-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; six brothers, John, Jacob, Abraham, Peter, Cornelius and infant brother Henry Veer; sisters, Helen, Adrian, Mary Eaves, Kathryn Morrin and Marjorie Veer.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at the Walley-Mills-Zimmerman Funeral Home, 700 E. Jackson Boulevard, Elkhart, with the Rev. Marion Crumb of the Masonic Home in Franklin officiating. Burial will be at the Prairie Street Cemetery with military honors.
Calling is from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday and one hour prior to the service Monday at the funeral home. An Eastern Star and Masonic Service will be at 4:30 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.[[In-content Ad]]
