July 28, 2016 at 4:25 p.m.
Adults who have a positive influence on the lives of children will be the focus of this year's Education Summit Thursday.
Featured speaker for the ninth Education Summit, "Let's Make A Difference," will be Charles F. Pratt, judge of the Allen Superior Court Family Relations Division.
Pratt received the 2002 Robert J. Kinsey Award for outstanding judicial services to children and youth, and is a member of the policy council for Allen County's positive youth development initiative, "Great Kids Make Great Communities."
He is also the founder and coordinator of the Annual Conference on Youth in northeastern Indiana and is known for his efforts to find successful practices and strategies for serving children and families who enter the juvenile justice system.
Other groups will give reports on their youth-oriented programs as well. Richard and Nancy Rooker will speak on Warsaw Community Schools' EdCom Expo, Joe Banks will talk about the middle school career fair, Patricia Outlaw will report on R.R. Donnelley & Sons' middle school program and Suzie Light, executive director of the Kosciusko County Community Foundation, will talk about the Community Book Read.
The purpose of the Education Summit, said Larry Chamberlain, chairman of the summit planning committee for the Education Subcommittee of the Warsaw/Kosciusko County Chamber of Commerce, is to bring together business professionals, educators, parents and members of the community "in an annual forum not only to discover what's going on in education ... but to discuss ways we can become more involved and make a positive difference in the lives of young people in our county."
He added: "It's not just a business event or an education event. It's a community event to help young people and find ways to work together to help young people in the county."
The Summit is scheduled to begin Thursday at 2517 Restaurant at 7 a.m. and end at 10:30 a.m. Following the speaker and the presentations, attendees will organize into individual table discussions, ending with group reports and a summary of key points.
The event is free and is open to the public, but registration is requested by Monday. For more information or to register, contact the Chamber at 267-6311 or e-mail [email protected] [[In-content Ad]]
