Spring is here. Baby wild animals are being born and getting into trouble, either lost or abandoned or orphaned. What do you do if you find one? It is very important that:

1) You get it warmed and to safety and then to a licensed rehabilitator ASAP. Call your local police or DNR for the number of someone near you.

2) You do not try to feed it yourself. Babies cannot take regular milk and other milk products but need a special milk. They can easily be killed by feeding them wrong or while they are cold.

3) It is illegal and unfair to try to make pets out of them. They are cute now, but grow into wild animals and can and will bite. Keeping them can get you a fine and get the animal confiscated. If you or someone else is bitten, rabies testing (which means the death of the animal) and vaccinations for the person bitten may be required by law.

That being said, Seven's Heaven Wildlife Rehabilitation near Pierceton has been licensed and taking these animals, as well as unwanted exotic animals and helping the shelter with dogs, since 2002. For many animals we have been the last resort as many rehabiltators take only a few animals or have gone out of business due to the stress and financial burden this places on them.

The economy has hurt us to the point we may not be able to take animals this year due to lack of funding. It is very expensive to feed and get medical care for these animals. We have been operating solely on donations and volunteers.

The need in our area is a big one as this area grows and puts more and more animals out of a home.

Our yearly meeting is Wednesday at the Blue Lion at 7 p.m. Come earlier if you want to enjoy a dinner there. We will be discussing how we can stay open and how to get more community involvement going so we can remain open and continue serving the animals and people in our community. We desperately need help raising funds to pay for the needs we have to remain open this year. It is a very critical time for everyone, especially the animals who will not have a place to go should we have to close for this year. We have helped hundreds of them every year.

If you can help and need information, contact Seven's Heaven at 260-609-7249 or write to Seven's Heaven at 6027 S. 550E, Pierceton, IN 46562.
