FORT WAYNE - Helen L. Hoffman Thieme, 84, died Jan. 23, 2009, in Lutheran Hospital.

She was born Sept. 30, 1924, near Silver Lake, to Claude and Della Gagnon Hoffman. In 1944, she married Floyd Thieme, who died in 1994.

She was a 1942 Gilead High School graduate. She moved to Fort Wayne in 1943, and started working at General Electric in January 1943, retiring as a supervisor in 1984, after 38 years of service. She also worked St. Joseph Hospital with the Healthy Life Step Program for several years. She did trip escorting for more than 15 years, organizing and leading for the GE Club, Healthy Lifesteps and Pen El Chapter. She was a member of Lutheran Church, Elex Club, Pen El Chapter, Lutheran Health Society, G.E. Club, G.E. Quarter Century Club, Elex Past President Club and Volunteer Center (RSVP). She held office at various times in all the above. She also sang with the Sounds of Friendship choir. She was a volunteer with the Fort Wayne Airport as a hostess on Friday Night, Volunteer Center, Lutheran Hospital, G.E. Club Pensioneers Activities and other places where needed. She received lots of honorable mention and awards for her time.

Surviving are a son, Les (and spouse Georgia) Thieme, Sturgis, Mich.; a daughter, Melody (and spouse Robert) King, Fort Wayne; eight grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; a brother, Terry (and spouse Dianne) Hoffman, Macy; and two sisters, Lynda (and spouse Ronnie) Butcher, Roann, and Jennifer (and spouse Tom) Hoagland, Claypool. She was preceded in death by a granddaughter, three sisters and five brothers.

Services will be at 12:30 p.m. Tuesday at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Fort Wayne. Burial will be in IOOF Cemetery, New Haven.

Calling is from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. today at Klaehn, Fahl and Melton Funeral Home, Fort Wayne, and one hour prior to the service Tuesday at the church.
