Today is Dr. Robert Haworth's last official day as superintendent of Warsaw Community Schools.

Friday at noon, the Warsaw School Board will meet to name an interim superintendent. The meeting will be held at the Central Instructional Materials Center Board Room, 1 Administration Drive, Warsaw.[[In-content Ad]]Haworth publicly announced his resignation at the July 7 meeting, effective July 31. He will be taking a vice presidency position with the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics in Kansas City, Mo., and will be in charge of the Champions of Character Initiative.

Haworth was named Warsaw's superintendent on Feb. 20, 2006, replacing interim superintendent Ralph Bailey, who was hired after the resignation of Dr. Dave McGuire.

During his two-year tenure at Warsaw Schools, Warsaw Schools was one of six Indiana school systems that made Adequate Yearly Progress for two consecutive years on the ISTEP+. With WCS making AYP for a second consecutive year, the school system is no longer classified as a Title I school corporation under "corporation improvement."

Haworth also helped oversee WCS's current building project.

At the end of the 2003-04 school year, Atwood, Silver Lake and Claypool elementary schools were closed. Since then, students at those schools have been transported to other schools, contributing to overcrowding problems.

On May 21, 2007, the school board approved moving forward with Step 1 of Option A. Step 1 includes building a new Leesburg and Madison elementary schools, and expanding and renovating Jefferson and Claypool schools. The total bond issue originally was slated for $65 million, but was approved at $59.16 by State Tax Control Board Commissioner Cheryl Musgrave in December.

Haworth's departure is one of many personnel changes to also hit Warsaw Schools during the past year.

In May, the Metropolitan School District of Wabash County unanimously approved Dr. Sandra Weaver as its new superintendent of schools, with her duties beginning July 1. Weaver was the assistant superintendent for Warsaw Community School Corp.

Effective July 1, Warsaw Community High School Assistant Principal Troy Akers took over the principal duties at the high school from Dr. Jennifer Lucht. Lucht served as principal for the past five years, and was assistant principal for 12 years. Before her resignation, Lucht was slated to become Warsaw Community Schools' director of development, a newly created position.

On March 31, the school board approved hiring Joe Santa as WCHS athletic director. Santa was the athletic director at Huntington North High School. Santa replaced Dave Fulkerson, who stepped down June 30 after 27 years at WCHS. Fulkerson will work with the school system as an associate athletic director.

After four years, John Snyder stepped down in March as the girls varsity head basketball coach. The school board approved assistant coach Michelle Harter as his replacement.

Phil Jensen returns to coach the WCHS football team this year, replacing Akers. The board, on April 21, approved hiring Jensen.

Warsaw School Board members are President Ron Yeiter, Vice President Dan Robinson, Gene England, Chuck Sauders, Delores Hearn, Tammy Dalton and Deb Wiggins.
