BOURBON – Triton junior point guard Taylor Hatfield helped get her team a 52-48 win Wednesday night in Bourbon.
After blowing a 45-40 lead with 2:31 remaining, the Class 1A No. 10 Triton Lady Trojans (8-2) found themselves down 46-45 to the Rochester Lady Zebras  (4-5) with 1:05 remaining.
With her team down by one, Hatfield pulled off a three-point play by driving and making a layup with 53 seconds remaining.
However, Rochester tied the game at 48-48 with 32 seconds remaining on a putback bucket by junior Breanna Paulik.
With the game tied, it was Hatfield’s speed once again that was the difference, as she once again got into the lane, drew contact and went to the line to make two free throws with 6.9 seconds remaining in the game.
“We talked about it,” Rochester coach Tony Stesiak said about Hatfield’s drive to the bucket. “We knew it was coming. We just didn’t make good enough adjustments and our help was a step slow. I was real disappointed on some defensive breakdowns. But a credit to her. She put the ball on the floor and made a play.”
And it’s a play she’s run a lot this year.
“Taylor is very good at getting to the basket,” Triton coach Adam Heckaman said about the speedy guard. “She’s learning when to kick it or pull up and shoot a jumper, instead of trying to draw the foul. She’s learned a lot of that this year. With this team, she felt she could get around them and I did too – that’s why we ran it.”
Hatfield’s free throws gave Triton the lead, but a steal by senior Shana Anderson, which was followed by a buzzer-beating layup sealed the deal.
“They have a player in Hatfield, and with Anderson, they kind of willed their team to victory,” Stesiak said. “They put their team on their backs and said, ‘We aren’t going to lose this game.’ We don’t have anybody like that yet.”
The game was Anderson’s first after being suspended five games for disciplinary reasons, and it showed.
After sitting out the first quarter, Anderson missed her first eight shots, but eventually found herself in the fourth quarter, when she scored eight points,  and recorded three rebounds and two steals.
“She struggled, she was rusty,” Heckaman said of Anderson, a two-time Times-Union All-Area Team member. “You don’t play for five games, you’re going to come out that way. I think it was a little bit of nerves too. She wanted to get back in there and pick up right where she left off, but she wasn’t quite able to.”
Anderson finished the game with eight points, nine rebounds and five steals, while Hatfield led way with a game-high 21 points.
Also for Triton, junior Kylie Mason scored 11 points and dished out four assists.
In a game of contrasting styles, it showed as things went well for the bigger Lady Zebras when things slowed down, while the Lady Trojans made things happen with an uptempo pace.
That was no more evident than in the third and fourth quarters.
After scoring just six points in the third, the Lady Trojans got seven steals in the fourth, leading to a 23-point frame.
“Our goal is to try to speed the game up,” Heckaman said. “There was a stretch where we weren’t able to do that, and they took advantage. Then, late in the fourth, we went on a run by speeding it up. We started getting more possessions.”
That style has helped Triton win five-straight, but a big test comes Wednesday at home against Warsaw.
“We’re just moving on to the next one, and with that being Warsaw, that’s obviously a big one,” Heckaman said. “We’re going to need to come to practice and work hard. The girls are focusing on knocking them down one at a time and seeing what happens. We’re going to come in here next Wednesday and play against a pretty good 4A team.”
