He was born Feb. 25, 1937, in Wabash, to Elwood W. “Slim” and Bernice J. Walker Arthur. On July 29, 1962, in the Burton Methodist Church of Rochester, he married Wanda M. “Peg” Alderfer, who survives
He owned Arthur’s Service Station in Akron for 25 years, where they maintained Sonoco Paper Products Company of Akron semi trucks fleet. Then he became shop supervisor at Builders Transport/Dedicated Fleet, where he retired. He worked after retirement as Pike Lumber Company’s highly skilled handyman and carpenter.
He was a 1955 graduate of Akron High School. He served his country as a U.S. Army veteran. He attended the Akron Church of God for 53 years. He was a longtime member of the Akron Lions Club, where he was past president, and was awarded the Melvin Jones Fellow in 2008 and the Distinguished Lions in 2011-12. As a Lion he worked on many projects that included building many ramps for the disabled, a longtime fryer at many fish fries, an active member of the Indiana Racing Lions in numerous parades throughout the state, and instrumental in building the Akron Community Center. He was a master woodworker, making many cabinets and pieces of furniture. He enjoyed playing cards with his good friends and an avid fisherman.
Also surviving are three daughters: Brenda (and spouse Jim) Ross, Akron; Bonita (and spouse Brian) Klein, Connersville; Becky Arthur Gearhart, Akron; two sisters, Barbara Zartman, Twelve Mile, and Mary Frances (and spouse Richard) Wood, Akron; and seven grandchildren: Allyson and Tyler Ross; MacKenzie, Trey and Bryce Klein; and Aaron and Cameron Gearhart. He was preceded in death by his parents; an infant brother, Jack Arthur; and a brother-in-law, David Zartman.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Akron Church of God, 301 S West St. Burial with graveside military rites will be in Akron Cemetery.
Calling is from 2 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
