He was born Jan. 22, 1920, in Locke Township, to Harvey and Minnie Mattern Miller. On April 10, 1943, in Salina, Calif., he married Maureen Wiseman, who preceded him in death.
He graduated from Nappanee High School in 1937 and went to work for the Nappanee Milling Co. in 1936, where he eventually became purchasing agent. After returning from World War II, he resumed his career with the mill, eventually becoming plant manager after the company was purchased by International Multifoods and became Supersweet Feeds. He remained there until his retirement. He was stationed at Fort Ord with the U.S. Army, serving from Jan. 1, 1942, to Feb. 9, 1946. He attended Officers Candidate School and became a captain. He fought on the island of Attu in the Aleutian Islands, Alaska.
He graduated from an agricultural short course at Purdue University. He served as both a councilman and interim mayor through the years. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church, serving as elder and on various committees.
Surviving are a daughter, Becky (and spouse Carl) Corey, Rhinelander; a son, Kerry (and spouse Joanne) Miller, Jamestown, N.C.; a sister, Jean (and spouse Bill) Matthews, New Orleans, La.; four grandchildren; two step-granddaughters; three great-grandchildren; and a step-great-granddaughter. He was preceded in death by a sister and a brother, James.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Grace Point Presbyterian Church, Nappanee, with the Rev. Terry Tyler officiating. Burial will be in South Union Cemetery with military graveside rites by members of Nappanee American Legion.
Calling is from noon to 2 p.m. Tuesday at the church.
