COLUMBIA CITY – Harry P. Chalk, 84, Columbia City, died at 5:50 p.m. Dec. 18, 2014, at his residence. He was born Aug. 1, 1930, in Champaign, Ill., to Joseph and Lena McLaughlin Chalk. On July 2, 1955, he married LaVonne L. Miller, who survives. They made their home in rural North Manchester. In 1995 they moved to Columbia City. As a young boy, his family moved to Sidney, where he completed his education. On Aug. 9, 1948, he enlisted in the U.S. Army, serving during the Korean War from which he received a Purple Heart and Bronze Star. He was honorably discharged Aug. 10, 1954. He was employed at Syracuse-Regent Mobile Homes for 14 years, and retired from Whitley Manufacturing with 16 years of service. His memberships include St. Paul of the Cross Catholic Church, American Legion Post #98 and South Whitley V.F.W. Also surviving are six children: Andrew (and spouse Twyla) Chalk; Mansfield, Ohio; Deborah (and Jerry Egolf) Chalk, North Manchester; Joseph (and spouse Jill) Chalk, Warsaw; Mark (and spouse Pat) Chalk, Fort Wayne; Bryan (and spouse Kay) Chalk, Plymouth; and Deanna (and spouse Michael) Lahmon, Fort Wayne; 11 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and a sister, Pat Martin, Indianapolis. He was preceded in death by three brothers: Joe, Ted and Francis; and three sisters: Clara Michael, Mary Rose Tackwell and Helen Boyer. Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. Paul of the Cross Catholic Church, 315 S. Line St., Columbia City. Burial will be in Catholic Cemetery with military honors presented by members of the Whitley County Korean War Veterans Honor Guard. Calling is from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at Smith & Sons Funeral Home, Columbia City, with a prayer service at 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home, and after 10 a.m. Tuesday at the church. ***** Memorials to St. Paul of the Cross or Parkview Hospice.
