A special flag for the Pfahl family was raised this morning at Harrison Elementary School.

The U.S. flag was flown over the U.S. Embassy, Baghdad, Iraq, recently in honor of Harrison Elementary on behalf of Randall O. Pfahl, son of Major Raymond O. Pfahl Jr. Major Pfahl currently is serving at the Embassy. The school also received an official plaque.[[In-content Ad]]According to Donita Pfahl, wife of the major, Raymond is on his third tour of duty, having served in Desert Storm, Bosnia and the current war. He had retired in 2002, but was called back to duty.

The Embassy has a program they initiated that if a school or Legion sends a flag to the Embassy, the Embassy will fly the flag for a day, and then send it back to the school or Legion to be flown back home. Post 49 sent three flags - one for the Legion, one for Harrison, and a third for Lakeview Middle School where the major's eighth-grade son, Russell, attends. The flags for the two schools were donated by the Legion.

The Pfahl's oldest son, Raymond III, a 2005 Warsaw Community High School graduate, currently is serving in Afghanistan. Raymond III and his father both are with the 82nd Airborne. Donita is a veteran, too, having served from 1978-92 as a captain.

Randall said when he is old enough, he plans to serve in the Armed Forces. For the flag-raising ceremony today, he was wearing the uniform his father gave him, and a hat from his brother Raymond III. Randall and Russell, Donita said, wear the uniforms their father gave them every chance they get. Russell and Randall both also are members of the Sons of the American Legion, and in Scouts.

Donita said Major Raymond Pfahl Jr. may be back on break in April or May. Bob Morrison, American Legion Post 49, said the major may have the possibility of having to serve another tour. They have no idea as to when he'll be finished.

Harrison Principal Randy Polston said he's just really proud of Randall. Randall wants to share the experiences of his dad every day with the school. When the flag arrived back from Iraq, and Polston told Randall the flag arrived, he said Randall was extremely excited.

"It's just really neat to see a son's pride in his father," said Polston.
