SYRACUSE - Harriet N. Deterling, 75, of Syracuse, died at 3:48 p.m. July 15, 2008, in Goshen General Hospital.

She was born Feb. 20, 1933, in Randolph County, to Clarence C. and Miriam C. Hinshaw Grindle. On May 21, 1955, she married Roland "Ben" Deterling, who survives.

Moving to Syracuse from Fort Wayne in 1991, she was a retired home economics and science teacher at Montgomery County Schools, Muncie Community Schools and Southwest Allen County Community Schools, and served as a substitute teacher at Wawasee Schools for 17 years. She was a member of Calvary United Methodist Church, Syracuse, where she was involved with the choir and was the director of the handbell choir for many years. She was a member of NEA, Indiana State Home Economics Association and formerly traveled to Europe and across America with Varner Chance's Sounds of Hope.

Also surviving are a son, Benjamin (and spouse Kimberly) Lance, Etters, Pa.; two daughters, Lisa Carol (and spouse Philip) Hauth, Fort Wayne, and Laura Lynn (and spouse Randy) Wegner, Phoenix, Ariz.; six grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; a great-granddaughter; and a sister, Donna (and spouse John) Williams, Albion, Mich. She was preceded in death by a granddaughter.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Calvary United Methodist Church, Syracuse, with Pastor David Herr officiating. A graveside service will be at 2:30 p.m. at Elm Ridge Cemetery, Muncie.

Calling is from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Mishler-Eastlund Funeral Home, Harris Chapel, Syracuse, and one hour prior to the service Saturday at the church.
