SYRACUSE – Harold “Junior” Bitner Jr., 87, of Syracuse, died at 7:35 a.m. May 3, 2011, in Miller’s Merry Manor, Syracuse.
He was born Dec. 14, 1923, in Mishawaka, to Harold and Lois C. Reeve Bitner. On Jan. 22, 1984, in Syracuse, he married Janet I. Downing Messenger, who survives.
He was a lifetime Cromwell/Syracuse area resident and graduated from Cromwell High School in 1941. He retired from farming after 60 years. He was a member of Wawasee Lakeside Chapel, Syracuse; Masonic Lodge 705, Cromwell; and Mizpah Shrine, Fort Wayne.
Also surviving are a daughter, Lori (and spouse Dan) Reynolds, Ligonier; two grandsons; two great-grandchildren; four stepdaughters, Pam (and spouse Justin) Hymer, Teresa (and spouse Brian) Sabin and Brenda (and spouse Samuel) Morehouse, all of Syracuse, and Charlene (and spouse John) Glon, Larwill; nine step-grandchildren; seven step-great-grandchildren; and a sister, Laveta (and spouse Marvin) Phares, Wolcottville. He was preceded in death by a daughter and a son.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Wawasee Lakeside Chapel, Syracuse, with the Rev. Harlan Steffen officiating. Burial will be in Sparta Cemetery, Kimmel.
Calling is from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Owen Family Funeral Home, Syracuse, with a Masonic service at 8 p.m.
