MILFORD - Milford Town Council dealt with several issues and approved various expenditures Monday.

Keith Hardy told the council he's interested in serving as a member of the Area Plan Commission. The council approved to ask Hardy to serve as Milford's representative on the commission.[[In-content Ad]]Town Marshal Rich Miotto asked the council for approval to reimburse officer Travis Marsh for the cost of body armor. Marsh previously served with another police force in Michigan, and had the armor custom made for him. The council agreed to a reimbursement of $580 for Marsh since the town provides all necessary equipment for its officers, and this figure is in line with what would normally be spent.

Milford Fire Department reported the new rescue truck is now in service, with all necessary gear and equipment installed. The older rescue truck will eventually be put up for sale, although no firm date was discussed.

The department also will continue to host a first responders class on Tuesdays and Saturdays at the Milford Fire Department.

Utilities Superintendent Dallas Winchester asked the council about two major expenses for the town.

The first was the presentation of a bid for work on Main Street. This involves milling and paving, from Catherine Street to the doctor's office, and will include Emeline Street to the railroad tracks, Catherine Street to the tracks, and does include Catherine Street down to Henry Street. Phend and Brown's bid for the project was $37,668. The council awarded them the contract, although no time frame for this work has been scheduled.

The other expense presented by Winchester was for a sewer collection system. This is known as a U.S. Sewer Jetting machine, capable of 4,000 psi that uses water pressure to clean underground pipes. Total cost for the model in question is $38,072, but Winchester stated that 10 percent down would enable the manufacturer to begin building the unit. The council approved this purchase.

The street department also has a 1997 Ford S250 truck with snow blade for sale. It has 30,000 miles, and can be inspected at the street department facility, 600 N. Main St. Interested parties should contact Randy Beach at 574-518-4519. The department is accepting sealed bids, which should be presented at the clerk's office no later than Aug. 10 at 5 p.m. Bids will be opened at the August council meeting.

Winchester also updated the council regarding an ongoing situation regarding a residential clean up at 310 N. James St. The property owners have been provided a dumpster, but the situation has yet to be completely resolved, said Winchester.

Mowing is another issue the department continues to deal with. So far, five warning letters have been sent, and six verbal warnings have been issued to property owners not in compliance. According to Winchester, so far one property owner has reimbursed the town for providing mowing service.

In other financial matters, the council agreed to contract with Benson Communications to develop a Web site for the town. Total cost annually is not to exceed $1,000, which will include a $70 monthly hosting fee.

Milford Town Council members are Gary Hurd, Robert Cockburn and Douglas Ruch.
