Haines Wins First Round Of County Spelling Bee

"Nepotism" is defined by Webster's Dictionary as "favoritism shown to relatives, especially in securing jobs."

Milford School sixth-grader Hannah Haines didn't need any favoritism Tuesday night as she won the 2011 Kosciusko County Spelling Bee fifth- and sixth-grade division on her own merits, securing the victory with the word "nepotism".

Her parents, Brian and Vicki, however, were in the audience to support her.

Haines won the first round of the county spelling bee in just five rounds. Two of the 18 total spellers went out in round one, eight more went out in round two, four in round three, and three misspelled in round four. Spellers faced words such as capillary, unchangeable, nonnegotiable and gigabyte.

Haines faces the winner of the seventh- and eighth-grade division Thursday immediately after that division names a champion. The middle school division starts at 6 p.m. at the KREMC building, 370 S. CR 250E, Warsaw.

Besides a trophy, the winners of the two grade division bees for Kosciusko County each will receive a $2,500 Richard R. Long Scholarship. The scholarship is given in recognition of Long's many years of service to the children, teachers and parents of North Webster School, and in honor of his work for the International Palace of Sports, now known as the Shoop Sports and Youth Foundation. The Shoop Foundation funds the spelling bee scholarship to help provide future higher education for the bee winners.

The winner of the spelling bee final Thursday advances to the regional spelling bee. The regional bee will be March 12 at 10 a.m. at the Rhinehart Music Theater's Auer Auditorium. The theater is on the campus of IPFW, Coliseum Boulevard, Fort Wayne.

There are only three spellers in the seventh- and eighth-grade division this year. The three eighth-graders that will compete include: Evie Daggett, Lakeview Middle School; Drew Tomasik, Edgewood Middle School; and Catherine Yankosky, Milford School.

The other fifth- and sixth-grade spellers Tuesday night included: William Geer, Syracuse Elementary; Justin Horbett, Leesburg Elementary; Victoria Biddle, Tippecanoe Valley Middle School; Lacey Helfers, HELPS Home School Group; Emily Lynch, Claypool Elementary; Karissa Meyers, Sacred Heart School; Brianna Pitts, Warsaw Christian School; Aaron Sandoval, Jefferson Elementary; Jack Turner, Eisenhower Elementary; Kaeden Underwood, Mentone Elementary; Cole Hoskins, Lincoln Elementary; Matthew Kolbe, Washington Elementary; Madison McBride, Wawasee Middle School; Ellie Nieveen, Harrison Elementary; Rosalie Garro, North Webster Elementary; Lauro Martinez, Akron Elementary; and Lilyana Ortega, Madison Elementary.

Kosciusko REMC is the presenting sponsor and host for the spelling bee. KREMC, in conjunction with other Touchstone Energy® cooperatives, also sponsors the regional spelling bee.[[In-content Ad]]
