Volunteers rolled up their sleeves Wednesday afternoon to assist in building a Habitat For Humanity of Kosciusko home in Warsaw.

The groundbreaking for the home was July 24 at 559 E. Market St., Warsaw, northeast of Dollar General.

Construction of the home began Aug. 3, according to Jon Scroggs, Habitat construction coordinator.

The home’s foundation has been laid, and on Wednesday the home’s walls went up.

Rebeca Spears, and her son, Carlos Cabrera, will be the recipients of the 1,100-square-foot home that will be handicap accessible to accommodate Cabrera, who is in a wheelchair.

The goal is for the family to move in the week before Thanksgiving.

Spears said she and her family live in an apartment, and the home will give them added space.

Spears assisted volunteers with building the home Wednesday.

“It is a blessing to see all the volunteers who have come out, and I wouldn’t have missed this for anything,” Spears said.

People from church groups, fire departments, local residents and businesses assisted with the building efforts.

Local businesses donated food and water for the volunteers.

Fred Scroggs, 92, Jon’s father, was one of the volunteers who helped with the building.

Scroggs is retired from the Red Cross, and has assisted repairing homes of flood and tornado victims with church groups.

“It’s wonderful to help with the Habitat home and see it built, and I’m glad they can do this,” Scroggs said.

Adam Turner, Habitat board vice president, said Spears and Cabrera are deserving of the home.

“As we move forward this home emphasizes the importance of providing a place to stay for a family that may be their easiest and best means for acquiring their own residence,” Turner said.[[In-content Ad]]
