Gurney E. Smith Jr., 80, of 1321 Wooster Road, Winona Lake, died at 11:01 a.m. Jan. 19, 2008, in his residence.

He was born Nov. 10, 1927, at home in Valley View, Pa., the eighth of nine children, to Gurney E. Sr. and Mabel Bossler. On April 6, 1941, he married Marilyn Maria Weinreich, who died April 11, 2005.

He was an auto mechanic at Bresslers Auto Service, Hegins, Pa., for many years, and was a small engine specialist. Moving to Warsaw in 1975, he worked in a small engine shop and later at Brethren Herald Print Shop. He attended Tri Valley High School, Hegins. A resident of Kosciusko County since 1976, he was a member of the Antique Tool Collectors Society and loved to restore and repair antique clocks. He was a member of Warsaw Community Bible Church and was a respected representative of the Lord. He enlisted in the U.S. Coast Guard in 1946, serving two years as 1st Class Seaman serving in World War II.

Surviving are two sons, Craig H. Smith, Clarks Summit, Pa., and Dan L. (and spouse Linda) Smith, Warsaw; three grandchildren, Shawn (and spouse Alicia) Smith, Philadelphia, Pa., and Jason (and spouse Karen) Smith and Shera (and spouse Jermaine) Chaney, both of Indianapolis; a step-grandson, Adam W. (and spouse Carmen) Grimm, Howell, Mich.; a step-granddaughter, Ashley D. Grimm, Fayetteville, N.C.; two great-granddaughters, Ani and Alexa Chaney, both of Indianapolis; and a great-grandson, Lucas Smith, Philadelphia, Pa. He was preceded in death by two sons at birth, four sisters and four brothers.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Redpath-Fruth Funeral Home, Warsaw, with Pastor Robert Courtney officiating. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery, Warsaw.

Calling is from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
