AKRON -ÊTwo students were removed from Tippecanoe Valley High School for allegedly having an unloaded gun at the school.
According to a press release from the Tippecanoe Valley School Corporation and information from the Kosciusko County Sheriff's Department, students and staff informed administrators that a student had a handgun in his locker at the high school Thursday.
Jeremy Wayne Strayer, 17, of Akron, was arrested and booked into the Kosciusko County Jail at 4:31 p.m. Thursday for dangerous possession of a gun and theft/receiving stolen property. His bond was set at $5,000.
Charges are pending against another 16-year-old student who reportedly was involved in the incident. The student's name has not been released.
After receiving information about the gun, school administrators and school resource officer Josh Spangle located Stayer and searched his locker.
The gun, which was not loaded, was found in a gym bag inside Stayer's locker. No live rounds were located near the gun.
No threats were made with the gun and Stayer did not threaten violence. Police believe the handgun was taken to the school to be traded for other property.
The Tippecanoe Valley School Corporation sent letters to parents about the incident, saying "there were no students in any immediate danger at any time."
"I am very pleased to report that our students are safer today because of the people that came forward to tell us about this situation," said the letter issued by Tippecanoe Valley High School Kirk Doehrmann. "Schools are not made safe by security cameras and metal detectors, they become safe when everyone in a school, both staff and students, feels cared about, valued and respected. That is the type of school that we are working towards and why I feel that Tippecanoe Valley is a great place for our kids."
The incident remains under investigation by the Kosciusko County Sheriff's Department. [[In-content Ad]]
