Guest Column: Reasons to Get on Board

From 4 to 7 p.m. Sept. 7 at Center Lake Pavilion there is going to be an event that provides every person in Kosciusko County an opportunity to give back to the community through volunteer leadership service – “Get on Board!”

No matter what your values are, no matter what keeps you up late at night, no matter what challenges you have met in the course of your life, there will be an organization there, with a mission that resonates with you.

The nonprofit organizations in Kosciusko County provide life-changing services to the residents of this area.  They help individuals and families whose needs are not being served by companies or the government.  They help the unborn and the dying.  They teach the illiterate and the developmentally challenged.  They give people a place to live and food to eat.  They give people hope and purpose and dignity.

If you own or operate a business in our community, your employees can benefit from serving as a volunteer at a nonprofit organization.  They will learn leadership skills, problem solving skills, financial planning and strategic thinking.  And they will bring those skills to work with them every day at their ‘paying job’.

Employees who are involved in leadership positions in the community are happier, more fulfilled, less likely to move away or change jobs.  That means less turnover, less money wasted on recruiting and training new employees, and an improved bottom line for your company.

If you have a few hours of time every month, you should come to Get on Board! and find an organization with a mission that matters to you.  Become a board member for that organization and receive more satisfaction than you thought possible from service that changes lives forever. Young or old, employed or retired, your time is a precious resource that you can share.

The following organizations have already committed to hosting a booth at Get on Board!  Several more are planning to be there:

Kosciusko County YMCA, Court Appointed Special Advocates, Special Olympics, Integrated Community Development Inc., Masterworks Festival, Kosciusko Runners Association, Kosciusko Literacy Services, Cardinal Services, Symphony of the Lakes, Classic Arts Programs, Tippecanoe Watershed Foundation,       New Beginnings Day Care Center, Fellowship Missions,       Lifeline Youth and Family Services, Kosciusko Home Care and Hospice, Consumer Credit Counseling, Dixie Sternwheeler Inc., Kosciusko County Right to Life, Kosciusko County Pee Wee Football, Kosciusko County Senior Services, Heartline Pregnancy Center, Senior Prime-life Enrichment Center, Lakeland Art Association, Kosciusko Lakes and Streams, Warsaw Community Public Library, American Association of University Women,         Big Brothers-Big Sisters,  Junior Achievement,                    Committee to Commemorate Martin Luther King, Jr.,                   The Rose Home, Warsaw Education Foundation,                  Kosciusko Chapter American Red Cross, and Baker Youth Club.

By giving your time and talent in service to the missions of these fine nonprofit organizations, you will grow as a person.  You will also make life changing things happen for others who deserve hope.  See you at Center Lake Pavilion on Sept. 7.[[In-content Ad]]
