About 1,000 area residents gathered at the Kosciusko County Fairgrounds Saturday for Day at the Lake for St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.

The event raised almost $23,000 for the Memphis, Tenn., hospital.

St. Jude treats children with catastrophic diseases like cancer and carries out research to find cures and better treatments. According to the St. Jude Web site, all patients accepted for treatment at St. Jude are treated without regard to the family's ability to pay.

Mike Loher was on the committee of organizers for the event.

"Basically, a group of us got together and decided to hold this event," said Loher.

Day at the Lake for the Children of St. Jude featured a corn hole tournament, karaoke contest, tractor, car, truck and bike cruise-in, blacksmith demonstrations, a beer garden and musical performances by several local bands and Phil Stacey, a 2007 American Idol finalist. Local vendors and organizations set up booths at Day at the Lake.

"There was something there for everybody," Loher said.

Several St. Jude patients and survivors of serious diseases spoke to the crowd about their experiences at St. Jude.

An all-inclusive admission was $10 per person, and Loher said 100 percent of the proceeds were donated to SJCRH. Loher said local sponsors covered the costs of the event. Loher said the biggest sponsor was Symmetry Medical with $10,000.

Other sponsors were: Kosciusko County Community Fair Inc., Willie 103.5, Biomet, Hamilton Realty, Countrywide Mortgage, Dennis Polk Equipment, Zimmer, Paragon, Medtronic, David and Tonya Adamson, Wildman Business Group, Plummer and Company, Charles Smith, Warsaw Real Estate Gary Salyer, Aquasystems, Our Father's House, Nifong Hauling and Excavating, Kerlin Trailer Sales, The Old Pro Shop, Echoes of the Past and Louis-Dreyfus Commodities.

The event committee was Loher, Jay Michaels, Loreen Lemon, Anita Jones, Minerva Nevaraz, Chris Barbosa, Karin Hamilton and Al Disbro.

Loher said the committee plans to make Day at the Lake an annual event.

"It's already in the plans for next year," he said. "We want to expand it. Down the road, we could even see it growing into a weekend event."

Loher said those interested in becoming a sponsor of Day at the Lake should call the Kosciusko County Fair Office at 574-269-1823, or Jay Michaels at Willie 103.5, 574-372-3064.[[In-content Ad]]About 1,000 area residents gathered at the Kosciusko County Fairgrounds Saturday for Day at the Lake for St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
