YMCA officials, community leaders, volunteers, donors, members and invited guests gathered for the groundbreaking ceremony Thursday of the new Parkview Warsaw YMCA.
It is planned to have the building open in November at U.S. 30 and Mariner Drive in Warsaw.
Weigand Construction is the contractor, and Moake Park Group Inc. is the architect, both of Fort Wayne.
According to Chad Zaucha, YMCA CEO, the 70,000-square-foot facility will include a health and wellness center, lap pool, instructional warm water pool, multi-purpose gathering spaces, a youth and teen center, a double gymnasium and outdoor space for day camp.
As part of their partnership, Parkview Health and the YMCA will share space within the facility where Parkview Health will provide and offer health and wellness services and programs for area residents.
In June the Y had raised $12 million toward the $13.1 million capital campaign goal and announced the public phase of the campaign to build the new facility.
Since then the community, coupled with matching grants from the Dekko Foundation and an anonymous source, has donated more than $1 million.
“We are so grateful for the support of the businesses, foundations, families and individuals who have ensured we raised enough to celebrate this officials groundbreaking,” Zaucha said.
Rich Haddad, K21 Health Foundation president; Joe Thallemer, Warsaw mayor; Philip Smith, Parkview Health vice president of strategy and business development and Mike Coon, YMCA board president, provided comments at the groundbreaking about the importance of the new Y.
Haddad said the new facility will benefit both youth and adults in Kosciusko County and encourage active lifestyles. He said the Y also will provide services to those in the community who do not have the financial means to pursue a healthy lifestyle.
“A vibrant and impactful YMCA is one of the most important and critical cornerstones in a community that is focused on and committed to health for their citizens,” Haddad said.
“The future health of our community not only is that people embrace a healthy lifestyle, but those who are trying to change habits and unhealthy behaviors need a place to learn and be supported in a group setting,” Haddad continued.
Thallemer said he recognizes the important of the Y  as an asset to the community, and said the Y has had a 50-year partnership with the city. Thallemer thanked the community for their support.
“This will be a fantastic facility and will improve, create and enhance liveability in our community,” Thallemer said.
Smith said the organization is excited to partner with the Y in creating the new facility.
“It will be a great asset for this community and we are excited for the partnership that is developing between Parkview and the YMCA that is a partnership focused on health and healthy living,” Smith said.
He stated the Y is focused on youth development, social responsibility and healthy living.
Coon thanked the mayor and city for supporting the plans for the new Y and the corporations and foundations for their financial support.
“This is a big day for our community,” Coon said. “We’ve been planning this new Y for years, knowing the tremendous impact it will have on the kids, families, adults and businesses who call Warsaw home.”
Coon said the project is so much more than a building, it’s about the YMCA’s commitment to the community for generations to come.
