Grose Powers Warsaw Past Valley

July 28, 2016 at 4:25 p.m.

AKRON – The night before families everywhere feasted on turkey for Thanksgiving, Warsaw senior Lucas Grose feasted on the Tippecanoe Valley Vikings.
In the season opener for both high school boys basketball teams, Grose poured in a game-high 26 points, pulled down 12 rebounds and made three steals as the Tigers beat their Kosciusko County rival 64-47 Wednesday in Akron.
"He's a man," Valley coach Bill Patrick said of Grose, who scored 15 of Warsaw's 26 first-half points. "He's just stronger than everyone else. He knows how to play the game. He's very smart, and he plays hard and physical. He's the best inside player we'll see all year."
The 6-foot-6 Grose scored his 26 points by making 7 of 9 attempts from the field and 12 of 15 attempts from the free throw line.
"Lucas Grose played at very high level," said Warsaw coach Doug Ogle. "He shot the ball well, he got to the free throw line, he rebounded well. He had a really solid game."
Senior Rhett Kesler added 12 points in the win – all from the free throw line in the fourth quarter – while senior Jordyn Coon contributed seven points and senior Jay Holladay and junior Jared Bloom finished with six points each.
Twelve players got minutes for the Tigers, with eight of them scoring in the 17-point win.
"We kind of wore them down," said Ogle. "We played nine guys and were able to put them away, and then we got some other guys some minutes. We had five guys score at least six points. I'm pleased with our effort."
The Tigers, who denied Patrick his 678th career win and 200th with the Vikings, led 14-7 after one quarter of play and 26-23 at halftime.
Warsaw took control of the game by outscoring Valley 38-24 in the second half, including a 19-6 spurt in the third quarter.
"We probably had 10 missed layups, we didn't shoot the ball well at all," said Patrick, whose team was 14 of 43 (33 percent) from the field overall and 1 of 12 from three-point range.
"If we hit some shots, maybe it's a little different, but they really hurt us in the third quarter. We just didn't have anybody really looking to score."
Sophomore Tanner Andrews led the Vikings in scoring with 17 points, while junior Nick Kindig added 16 and senior Robby Groom finished with six points.
No other Valley player scored more than three points.
While the Vikings struggled shooting the ball, making just 7 of 20 attempts in the first half and 7 of 23 in the second half, Warsaw was 15 of 29 (52 percent) from the field overall in the win, inlcuding a 7-of-11 effort in the second half.
The Tigers, who made 5 of 13 three-point attempts, certainly cashed in at the charity stripe, where they made 29 of 36 attempts.
Grose and Kesler combined to go 24 of 27 at the free throw line.
Valley was 18 of 26 at the charity stripe, with Andrews and Kinding making a combined 14 of 17 free throws.
In all, Wednesday's season opener featured 52 foul calls and 62 free throws.
The Vikings are in action again Tuesday at Argos, while Warsaw plays at Columbia City Saturday.
The Eagles will be a tough early-season test for the Tigers, as Columbia City returns the majority of its regional championship team from a year ago.
"They have six of their top seven guys back, and then Huntington North's best player moved in" Ogle said of Columbia City. "The combination of Derek Hinen and Drew Benedict is a very good one. Columbia City is a very good team. We're going to have to play really well to win that game."
