Griggs Scores Career High, Tigers Win Fifth Straight
July 28, 2016 at 4:25 p.m.
If only every night were senior night for Warsaw's Adam Griggs.
Everybody, the 6-foot-5 Warsaw senior said Friday night, wants to come out and explode on senior night.
Griggs certainly did, scoring a career-high 30 points and leading the Warsaw varsity boys basketball team to a 69-50 win over visiting Huntington North in the final regular season game in the Tiger Den.
"I was pretty pumped up," said Griggs, who was the first Tiger boys cager to score 30 in a game since Jerad Shaw netted 38 at Elkhart Memorial's North Side Gym two years ago. "My teammates did a good job getting me the ball. I was feeling it early. Everybody wants to come out and explode on senior night, and my teammates did a good job getting me the ball."
Griggs, whose previous high was 26 in a conference win at Northridge earlier this season, finished the game 11 of 16 from the field, 4 of 5 from three-point range, and converted all four of his free throw attempts.
"Adam Griggs played very well tonight, that's encouraging," said second-year Warsaw coach Doug Ogle. "Our shooting was very good. We shot the ball very well tonight."
Now 14-6 on the season and on a five-game win streak, the Tigers shot 25 of 47 (53.2 percent) from the field overall and 6 of 11 (54.5 percent) from three-point range. Huntington North, which fell to 15-4 on the season, shot 19 of 46 (41.3 percent) from the field overall and 5 of 15 (33.3 percent) from three-point range.
The Vikings entered Friday's contest on a six-game win streak and victorious in 11 of their past 12 games, but after a first quarter that ended in a 16-all tie Warsaw pulled away and held Huntington North 15 points below their season scoring average.
Griggs started the second quarter with a field goal and then a trey to put the Tigers up 21-16, and then after Huntington North sophomore Kris Kramer's field goal cut the lead to 24-22, Warsaw went on a 19-4 run from the 5:51 mark of the second quarter to the 5:03 mark of the third.
A quarter that has given them fits at times this season, the third quarter was a success for the Tigers Friday, as Warsaw led by 13 at the half and by 16, 53-37, after the third.
"Our goal was to win the third quarter, and we won it by three," said Ogle. "In some of our other games we lost the third quarter every time. I hope we learn to play with the lead and do what we did tonight."
To go with Griggs' 30-point outburst, senior Todd Braddock scored 13, junior Michael Moore 12 and junior Michael Wienhorst 10. Juniors Andrew Holladay and Nelson Conley rounded out the Tiger scoring output with three points and one point, respectively.
In nine of Huntington North's 15 wins the Vikings put up at least 75 points.
To hold them to 50 points and then win by the big margin was something Ogle was very proud of.
"I'm not so surprised that we won, but I'm surprised that we won like that," said Ogle. "This is a nice win in terms of our team confidence. We've had several games where we've gotten a lead and lost it. Tonight we protected our lead."
The Tigers protected their lead by getting good shots from the field and hitting them, as well as crashing hard on the boards.
Warsaw dominated the Vikings on the boards, outrebounding them 30-17.
"I thought we rebounded very well tonight," said Ogle. "We really had a good first half on the boards, and then Todd (Braddock) started the second half with a tip-in and then Michael Wienhorst had a rebound and basket."
Senior Mark Sherman, Wienhorst and Braddock all had five rebounds for Warsaw, while Griggs had four.
Leading by 16 after three quarters of play, Warsaw led by as much as 20, 69-49, in the fourth quarter and never allowed the Vikings to get closer than 14 in the final eight minutes of action.
"Huntington North is a good team," said Griggs. "We're gonna use this as a stepping stone for the sectional. This is gonna give us a lot of confidence going into the sectional."
The sectional draw is Monday evening, and then the Tigers host the 4A sectional March 2, 5 and 6. The Tigers finish the regular season with a game at Carroll next Friday.
Kramer led Huntington North in scoring with 14 points, while Neil Stoffel had 12, A.J. Turner 10 and Tim Frame nine.
