Greg Clay Strong In The Fourth, Tiger Boys Win

July 28, 2016 at 4:25 p.m.

By DALE HUBLER, Times-Union Sports Writer-

FORT WAYNE - In building a strong foundation one must have sturdy materials. For Warsaw's varsity boys basketball team at Fort Wayne South Tuesday night it was clay - senior Greg Clay.

The 6-foot-4 wing scored 13 of his game-high 20 points in the fourth quarter as the Tigers upended the host Archers 55-50 for their first win of the season. Warsaw is 1-1, while South Side falls to 2-1.

With Warsaw down 38-36 with 5:54 remaining in the final frame, Clay scored the Tigers' next seven points - a three-pointer, two field goals and a free throw - to give them a 44-39 lead with 3:06 left.

While Clay found the basket in the fourth quarter, shooting 3 of 5 from the field and 6 of 7 from the charity stripe, South Side found shots but couldn't get them to fall.

The Archers were 5 of 16 from the field in the fourth quarter, including a 2-of-7 performance from the arc by 6-1 junior Cameron Kizer.

"I thought our defense in the fourth quarter, in the matchup zone, was very good," veteran Warsaw coach Al Rhodes said. "They took a lot of threes, but we made sure we challenged them."

As was the case in Warsaw's season-opening loss in overtime at Columbia City Saturday, the Tigers made up for a poor first half with solid basketball late in the game.

Rhodes' stat sheets at halftime Tuesday showed the Tigers at a 44-percent error clip. After the five-point win when the 22nd-year coach, 15 wins short of 400 for his career, spoke of putting together a complete game. When Warsaw does that, he feels the Tigers will be a team to be reckoned with.

"What I told the kids is that we're not playing well, but we're playing with a lot of heart," Rhodes said. "What's gonna happen when we get things sharpened? Good things are ahead for this team. They just have to believe."

To go with his 20 points, Clay also pulled down eight rebounds. Junior center Ryan DeGeeter was 6 of 8 from the field, finishing with 14 points and seven rebounds. Senior point guard Brad Seiss was 3 of 4 from the field and 3 of 4 at the stripe and ended up with nine points.

Despite a 3-of-15 performance from the arc, Cameron Kizer led the Archers with 15 points, while Marty Kizer finished with 11 points.

With South Side leading 19-18 at the half, the two teams battled back and forth through the third quarter, with the Archers taking a seven-point lead before Warsaw forged another comeback.

A pair of free throws by junior Bernard Pollard gave South Side a 33-26 lead with 2:46 left in the quarter, but a three from Clay, baskets from Seiss and DeGeeter and a Clay free throw gave Warsaw a 34-33 lead going into the fourth.

The game remained tight much of the fourth quarter before a stretch of free throws gave Warsaw a 52-42 lead with 1:09 left in regulation.

"Once we got the lead we were able to stretch it out with good ball handling," Rhodes said. "We found the basket and were able to get to the free throw line. This gives our team some confidence, we haven't been playing well."

Warsaw Wrestlers Drop Match To Elkhart Memorial

By Jim Brenneman, Times-Union Sports Correspondent

ELKHART -ÊWarsaw's Tiger wrestlers won only four of fourteen matches in losing to Elkhart Memorial 44-20 in their first Northern Lakes Conference meet of the season.

A rule change this year has a random drawing determining which weight class is to open the meet. Against Memorial the wrestling began at the 152-pound class. A strong young Charger team chalked up five straight victories for a 21-0 lead before Warsaw was able to grab a victory at 275 pounds.

David Ferguson (275) showed good balance and a steady attack when he pinned Charger senior Mike Anderson in 1:05. But Memorial answered back with two more wins and a forfeit to put the team score at 35-6, a lead that could have been overcome only with five consecutive victories by fall for the Tigers. Such a chain of events did not take place.

Anthony Boley (125) won for the Tigers in 16-0 technical fall over Burton Boyd. Then Tanner Connealy (130) took an 11-4 decision over Marcus Andrews of Memorial. Warsaw's Matt Palladino lost a tough match when Aaron Johnson scored a reversal in the closing seconds. The final victory for the Tigers came when Kyle Boley (140) nailed Nick Corpe in 2:43.

In nine JV matches the Tigers grabbed three wins by three freshmen. Bobby Derbyshire and Aristeo Gonzales scored falls, while Eddie Sanchez won by decision.

Warsaw's head coach, Tony Boley was not disheartened by the team's loss, saying, "We have some very tough competition in our conference but we have a good young team."

Boley said he is encouraged by the fact that he has a large group of 34 wrestlers, but concluded, "We have a long way to go."

Warsaw stands at 5-1 on the season and 0-1 in the NLC. Next up for Warsaw on Saturday is the huge Lake Central Invitational. Wrestling begins at 9:30 a.m. and continues late into the evening in this double elimination tournament featuring some of the top wrestlers from the northwest part of the state.
