Greenway Project Coming Together

The Greenway trails project is coming together in bits and pieces with development proceeding here and there along the proposed path.
Activities director Andy McCleary advised Warsaw parks board members Tuesday a verbal agreement to purchase 28 acres of wetlands property has been secured for the Pike Lake - KCH branch of the Greenway.
This section of the project is expected to include a raised boardwalk across the wetlands area. It will begin near the Women's Health Care building and end along the south side of Pike Lake.
The "other" trail, beginning at the Chinworth Bridge and extending into Winona Lake has also seen improvements, according to parks director Jon Garber.
Garber said a Kiwanis Club Shelter has been moved to the bridge area and is ready for use.
McCleary said a grant request by the city of Winona Lake was denied and the Greenway committee is considering transferring some of the Indiana Department of Transportation funding to Winona Lake.
"They want to get started," McCleary said.
Organizations are being asked to help with maintenance along the proposed trail. City County Athletic Complex board members and county historical society members have committing time toward cleanup.
Garber advised board members Bob Richmond, Bill Baldwin and Cathy Folk that the city council cut the proposed 2002 budget by $50,000. The money, earmarked for waterlines to the Pike Lake Campgrounds, was removed from next year's budget and will be made available to the park department this year so the project can begin.
The campground was cited by Indiana Department of Environmental management last year because there is not enough separation between the water and sanitary sewer lines.
In other business the board:
• Agreed to recarpet the Kosciusko County Senior Citizens Center with the expectation that the senior center will provide $2,500 to offset costs.
• Changed closing time to 10 p.m. for private events scheduled in the Nye Youth Cabin and Ramsey buildings. The buildings are close to residential areas. Recently several parties have been loudly celebratory up until the midnight closing time.
• Reviewed playground equipment expected to replace wooden playground equipment.
• Heard the recent festivals went well and the added electrical sources have been appreciated.
• Heard the 30- by 45-foot addition to the storage building is nearly complete.
Warsaw parks department board members present were Bill Baldwin, Bob Richmond and Cathy Folk. John Sadler, Jeff Grose and Toby Sumpter were absent. [[In-content Ad]]
