Greenway Construction Begins

STAFF REPORT
After nearly five years of planning, the first segment of the Lake City Greenway began construction in December.
The Beyer Farm Trail, just east of Pike Lake, will connect the Kosciusko Community Hospital campus with the Pike Lake Park. The bicycle/pedestrian path, two-thirds of a mile in length, will include a 1,400-linear-foot boardwalk that will cross and protect a large wetlands.
The scenic route provides a unique experience of the urban wetland. Two small overlooks and one large overlook are planned to provide recreation enthusiasts an opportunity to observe wildlife and native vegetation in the wetland. Nearly 40 acres of wetlands have been preserved as public open space.
John T. Camden Construction Co. and Glunt Construction are braving the cold weather to keep the project on schedule. The first 400 feet of boardwalk is complete. The trail is scheduled to be open to the public in April.
Project costs are more than $250,000; however, the project is being completed without the use of property tax dollars. The city has received the following grants for this portion of the Lake City Greenway: a $100,000 Recreational Trails Program grant from the Indiana Department of Natural Resources; a $50,000 Kosciusko County 21st Century Foundation grant; a $4,000 Saemann Foundation grant; and a $2,500 grant from the Kosciusko County Community Foundation.
Additional funds have come from numerous community donations, including a contribution from Dr. Dean and Carolyn Jansen. [[In-content Ad]]
