"Spider-Man 3" makes its premiere Friday morning at 12:01 a.m. at North Pointe Cinemas. Then on Saturday, Chimp's Comix, 919 E. Winona Ave. Ste. 5, Warsaw, is giving away free comic books.
It's enough to keep fans of the Sandman awake all night.
Yvonne Keirn, general manager of North Pointe Cinemas, said Tuesday morning that she's seen "Spider-Man 3" and "it is awesome." It's one of those really good ones where it will keep the audiences' attention. It's done very well, she said, and has great special effects.[[In-content Ad]]"Spider-Man 3" will be shown in two auditoriums at North Pointe Cinemas for three to four shows per day. Showings will be spread out so everyone can find a perfect viewing time.
At 140 minutes long, Keirn said "Spider-Man 3" is long, but audiences will enjoy it so much that the movie will pass by quickly.
Tickets for "Spider-Man 3" went on sale Monday at 4 p.m. "We were presaling a lot of midnight tickets," she said. Tuesday morning, she was still responding to calls for tickets.
Whether it's "Spider-Man 3" or the "Fantastic Four," Keirn said all the comic book adaptation movies do really well in this area. "These always go big," she said.
"It's the imagination. We work every day, really hard, we want to be entertained" at the end of the day, she said.
After watching "Spider-Man 3," or while waiting to see it, why not pass the time with some free comic books?
Nick Kelley, owner of Chimp's Comix, said Free Comic Book Day is Saturday from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.
"Basically," he said, "you can come in and get two free comics of your choice from 36 comics."
If a person wants more than the two free comics, Kelley said a person can bring in one non-perishable food item for each additional comic they want. All food items will be donated to The Salvation Army.
Companies donating the comics this year for the annual Free Comic Book Day include DC, Marvel, Image, Dark Horse, Dynamite Entertainment and about five other companies.
Among the comics offered from Marvel are "The Amazing Spider-Man" and "Marvel Adventures with Iron Man & Hulk." Kelley said the two Marvel comics are all new stories written just for Free Comic Book Day.
This year, DC is offering "Justice League of America" No. 0 and "Legion of Superheros in the 31st Century" Issue No. 1.
Dynamite Comics is offering a flip book - "The Lone Ranger" on one side, "Battlestar Galactica" on the other side.
Teens may enjoy comics of "The Family Guy" and "The Simpsons," Kelley said, while younger kids may want "Little Archie" or "Mickey Mouse."
A prequel comic to this summer's "Transformers" movie also will be available. For the video game fans, there's a "Sonic the Hedgehog" comic. Also among the 36 to choose from is a preview of the upcoming comic "Who Wants To Be A Superhero?"
And if that isn't enough reason to run like The Flash to Chimp's Comix Saturday, Kelley said he also is having a huge storewide sale.
"Most everything will be on sale," he said.
