Grace Volleyball Team Heads For Nationals

WINONA LAKE -ÊThere's excitement in the air around Grace College.

Just ask volleyball coach Candice Moats about it. Say the word volleyball, and she lights up like a Christmas tree.

Maybe it because Christmas is coming early for the Lancers this year. The Grace College volleyball team is headed for Palm Beach, Florida, and the NAIA National Championships, and no one could be prouder than Moats.

After falling to Taylor University several times earlier in the season, the Lancers faced off against the No. 9 Trojans in the NAIA regional in Michigan.

Taylor won the first game of the match 33-31. Then the Trojans won the second game 30-28 to take a 2-0 lead in the best-of-five match.

"My concern was how do we get back after being down two games," said Moats. "We had to win three games in a row. But although we were not on top on the scoreboard, we did not feel like we were losing."

Then something happened to the Lancers. They stepped up to win three games in a row and get an automatic berth to the NAIA Nationals.

"We played at a higher level," said Moats. It was amazing to me the way the team stepped up and won three straight games against a very talented Taylor team. This is an incredible achievement."

Andria Parker of Silver Lake, Jamie Gill of NorthWood, Dawn Harper of Centerville, Ohio, and Laura Miller of Coppell, Texas, are prepared to lead the Lancers to a strong National Championship showing.

Parker and Gill are the players who set the example for the rest of the team.

"They never give up," said Moats. "They are a great example for the freshmen, and I admire them for that. They are examples of what you want to be out there on the court in big games."

Miller lends the defensive spark for the Lancers.

"Laura is the spark plug because of her defense," said Moats. "She is a small, tiny person who goes out there and plays big. She believes that she can get every single ball. Her work ethic is extraordinary."

Harper is stepping up after playing behind Kate Millen for the last few years.

"This year Dawn has really stepped up big," said Moats. "She lived in the shadow of Kate Millen the last couple years, but now she has really stepped up and had a tremendous year."

The seniors are hoping to extend their season beyond the first round of the national tournament.

After defeating Taylor, the Lancers have set their sights higher for the National Championships. The Grace squad is guaranteed four games in the tournament, and depending on their performance, the Lancers may play more.

Wednesday, the Lancers will face off against No. 4 St Mary of Nebraska, which sports a 31-2 record. Then the Grace squad will face off against No. 5 Fresno Pacific of Illinois, which has a 43-7 record, Thursday morning. Thursday afternoon the Lancers will face off against 33-8

Loyola of Louisiana. The Lancers will challenge 21-8 Southern Oregon Friday.

The Lancers will look to four seniors for leadership at the national competition.

BOURBON - With three players in double-figure scoring, including junior Ashli Senff's 28, Triton's varsity girls basketball team hosted and defeated Bethany Christian 84-43 Monday night.

To go with Senff's 28, Gina Westafer scored 14, while Amber Feldman chipped in with 11. Alison McClarnon added nine, while Carly Feldman and Tracey Bell had six each.

The Trojans led 27-14 after the first quarter and were comfortably in control with a 52-23 lead at halftime.

Jessica Buller led Bethany Christian with 15 points. No other Bruin had more than seven points.

Triton is now 5-0 and plays at Northern State Conference rival Knox Saturday.

After taking first place in seven of Saturday's 12 events, Wawasee's girls swim team defeated visiting Huntington North 108-78. Freshman Laura MacOwan took two individual first-place finishes for the Warriors, winning the 100 breaststroke and the 200 individual medley. The Warriors will be in action Tuesday at conference oppenent Elkhart Memorial.

Triton's wrestling team competed in the Elkhart Central Super Duals Saturday and came home with a 1-4 record. The Trojans defeated South Bend LaSalle 45-30, but lost to Tri-Central, Elkhart Central, Bremen and Central Noble.
